Inspired Islanders Look to Once Again Slow Rangers' Roll

Just as soon as I write off the Rangers, they come back to reel off six straight wins and climb within two points of the Penguins for second place in the stacked Metropolitan Division. They’ll go for their seventh in a row tonight when they travel to Brooklyn to take on their crosstown rivals, who have been playing much more inspired hockey since the firing of Jack Capuano.

SHARK BITES
  • The Rangers hold the 124-108-19-9 edge in the all-time series against the Islanders.
  • The Islanders are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home.
  • The Rangers are 1-5 SU in their last 6 games against the Islanders.

During their streak, the Rangers have gotten a bit lucky as they’ve won all but two of their games by just one goal. This has been a common thread for the Blueshirts as six of their last eight wins have been settled by a one-goal margin. They opened as the -115 road favorites for this one so what I’m suggesting is that a puckline bet on the Rangers tonight could be ill-advised.

It’s easy to look back at the Isles’ last game and see they got blown out by the Maple Leafs in Toronto but if you look back at their last five losses, you’ll see that they’ve come back with a win in all but one of those instances. That one loss came in overtime against a Hurricanes team that had won three straight games going into the contest and New York had Jean-Francois Berube (2-2-2, .904 SV %) occupying the blue paint.

A bet for value tonight is a good play. The Islanders are 8-3-2 since Doug Weight took over behind the bench and he should be able to get his team up for a matchup they’ve had plenty of success in the past few seasons.
