NHL First-Period Totals Betting Report

As sports betting evolves, we are seeing the emergence of some mainstream prop markets that are joining the ranks of traditional full-game moneyline, spread and totals plays. One such phenomenon that exploded last season is first-period totals betting in the NHL.

What better way to get some action in on your favorite teams without having to stay up past your bedtime?

How First-Period Totals Betting Works

The majority of NHL games have a full-game total in the range of 5.5 to 6.5 goals, so when you break that down into three periods, you’re looking at an average of two goals per period. That’s where the excitement and strategy of first-period totals OVER or UNDER 1.5 come in.

Like other markets, each game will have varying prices on the OVER or UNDER. For example, a game between the Avalanche and Lightning will have a much juicier OVER price than a game between the low-scoring Ducks and Wild.

How These Tables Work

Due to an overwhelming response from our Odds Shark community, we’ve created this table to track the best first-period OVER and UNDER teams. In brackets is the percentage of games in which the team went OVER the first-period total.

We include home and away splits because some teams perform much differently based on location and we also provide results from the last 10 games so you can see what the hottest trends are.

Keep in mind, every single game needs to be analyzed differently. Many factors should be considered when placing a bet (including who’s in net and player injuries) and this data can be a great weapon to have in your betting tool belt.
