Borussia Dortmund looks to maintain top spot at expense of FC Augsburg

The only side to remain undefeated in the Bundesliga this season and now looking to hold on to top spot, Borussia Dortmund hosts FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon looking for another three points in their title quest. New boss Lucien Favre is leaving his mark on his new club and Dortmund, with 14 points from six outings so far, will be expecting three more points against FC Augsburg over the weekend.

SHARK BITES
  • Dortmund has won nine of the previous 15 meetings between these two teams.
  • Dortmund has won eight of its last 10 home matches in the league.
  • Augsburg has won just two matches on the road this calendar year.

Advantage is now with Borussia Dortmund

It is a fair assumption that Borussia Dortmund is very much looking back on track under Lucien Favre. The addition of Spanish forward Paco Alcácer to the squad has also paid rich dividends, with the Spanish forward coming off the bench to score four goals for his new club.

Augsburg comes into this match with something of a reputation for stopping more technically gifted teams. They have already held German league champions Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw and will be hoping to do the same to Dortmund.

Nevertheless, it is the home side and league leaders who come into this match as the clear favorites to make it four wins in a row across all competitions. Borussia is at just -225 to wrap up the points, with visiting Augsburg all the way out at +600 to do the same. A draw is priced down the middle at +333, but we are fully expecting another Borussia victory this Saturday.

Dortmund dominant across the board

It is not only in domestic competition that Dortmund has been proving its credentials. Favre’s side can also boast a 100 per cent record in the UEFA Champions League, having beaten Club Brugge 1-0 in its opener before thrashing Monaco 3-0 this past Wednesday evening, a performance which included goals from Alcácer and Marco Reus.

We are expecting another impressive showing from Borussia this time around as well. It is never an easy task when trying to predict the exact score of any given game, but a repeat of that 3-0 outcome is priced competitively at +900 and, given Borussia’s excellent start to the season, may well be worth backing at that price.

However, Augsburg has some dangerous weapons of its own and the Borussia backline will need to be wary if they are not to be caught unaware. Augsburg breezed past Freiburg 4-1 in its last league outing, with striker Alfred Finnbogason helping himself to a hat trick – the forward is at +300 to get on the scoresheet on this occasion as well, but we are expecting the Augsburg defence to be far busier than that of the home side.

Borussia to show why its a title contender

Perhaps in previous seasons, this is the kind of encounter which could well have tripped up Borussia Dortmund in its title aspirations. Under Favre, the football may not be quite as flashy as it was under Thomas Tuchel, but the side is looking distinctly more resolute.

For that reason, we believe it is worth backing Borussia to win this game to nil (without Augsburg scoring a goal), an outcome which is priced at +160. In their last home game – a 7-0 thrashing of Nurnberg – Dortmund were rampant throughout, and although this game will certainly be a more closely fought affair, Dortmund should enjoy the lion’s share of possession.

Borussia is at +100 to score in both halves, and +225 to win both halves. And with their forward line, Favre is not exactly short of offensive options.

Paco Alcácer has been on the scoresheet in the last two matches and is at +105 to score at any time, while you can back him at +400 to score either the first or last goal of the game, just as he did in Borussia’s last Bundesliga encounter, away to Bayer Leverkusen.
