Chivas entertains rival América in Week 11’s marquee game

Chivas Guadalajara will play arguably its most important game of the season yet as the team hosts rival Club América in another edition of the Clásico Nacional.

It’s been a tough campaign for the Rebaño Sagrado. After a very promising start to their season, Jose Saturnino Cardozo and his team have been trending down for weeks now and need something to change fast if they want to be one of the eight teams to qualify to the Liguilla at the end of the season.

This game, though, is not just any other game for Chivas. They are facing their biggest rival and defending champion Club América. As opposed to Guadalajara, Club América has found some consistency of late and arrives to this match fourth in the league standings with 16 points. Though they are just one point above Chivas in the league table, Miguel Herrera’s men have lost just once in their last four league matches, in contrast to Chivas’ two defeats in their last three.

SHARK BITES
  • Five of the last six head-to-head meetings between these two teams have finished in the UNDER.
  • Club América has lost just once in its last six Liga MX meetings vs Chivas Guadalajara.
  • Chivas Guadalajara has lost just once in its last five Liga MX home matches.

Club América arrives in better shape

Indeed, without a doubt it will be Las Águilas who arrive to this Clásico Nacional in better shape, at least when referring to Liga MX play. Despite the fact that 2019 has been full of ups and downs for the defending champions, Club América has been able to consistently stay in the top half of the league table and within the top eight in the standings throughout the season.

This obviously differs from Chivas. Like previously mentioned, Guadalajara has had trouble playing like they were earlier in the season, winning just once in their last seven Liga MX matches. However, they have been largely successful at home, where they have lost just once in their last five Liga MX matches.

A balanced affair

The last time these two teams met in an official Liga MX match was in September of last year when both teams finished leveled at one goal apiece. Draws between these two teams have actually been a regular occurrence in the last few seasons, with three of their last six head-to-head meetings in Liga MX ending in a stalemate. As such, it’s quite difficult to give either of these two teams the recent historical edge.

That said, in the last nine league meetings between these two teams at the Estadio Akron, Club América has been able to evade defeat more than once, as they’ve lost just once in the course of those nine matches. Five of those games were actually Club América victories.

If there is some positive news for Chivas, it is that Las Águilas have been subpar away from the Estadio Azteca. They have lost in three of their last four away matches across all competitions, and their last match was a last-minute draw against Monarcas Morelia, one of the worst teams in the league.

Bet on the UNDER

When we think of Clásicos, we think of exciting matches. Well, this is one Clásico that hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in recent seasons. Taking a look at the final scores through the last few Clásico Nacionals, the UNDER has been a popular bet. That’s because five of the last six Liga MX games between Chivas and América have finished in the UNDER. This includes the last four meetings between these two teams at the Estadio Akron.

My take on the game...

There is going to be a lot on the line for both of these teams when they meet on Saturday. While I can see a potential scenario where Las Águilas get the victory, I feel like it will be the type of match where both teams will be happy to escape with a point. As such, I’m going with a draw.
