Odds to Win Best Picture at the 2019 Oscars
The 91st Academy Awards are live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 24 and will air live on ABC. The most prestigious award of the night is Best Picture and betting odds have been released for those among us who want to turn their award predictions into profit.
Oddsmaker Bovada has released betting odds on Best Picture with Netflix Studios’ Roma at -330 to take home the top prize. Below you can find the odds for all the nominees for Best Picture:
Roma (-330)
The Spanish language film Roma will look to become the first Netflix-distributed movie to take home Best Picture. It will happen eventually, and whether or not it’s this year or sometime soon, Netflix, which already dominates the binge TV viewing market segment, will win the Best Picture.
Roma has near perfect rankings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, was runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.
Popular with the Public
Black Panther (+3000), a superhero movie based off the Marvel Comics character, gained widespread acclaim as a blockbuster superhero movie without a white male protagonist. The Black Panther culture reached heights that not even the film’s creators could have hoped for with black youths – and youths of all races – identifying with the main character. It may not hit all the targets set forth by a selection committee, but it certainly hit with the public. Black Panther was the highest-grossing film in the U.S. and Canada in 2018.
Bohemian Rhapsody (+1800), the Freddie Mercury biopic, had a large studio push and, while certainly making money, is just the ninth-highest grossing film of the year worldwide. Despite that, this was the big winner at the Golden Globes. Critics have accused this film of not being fully true to the identities of Mercury and his Queen bandmates and containing some factual errors and omissions, but the quality of the production and score is undeniable.
