Polymarket’s sports prediction markets have grown and will likely continue to grow as its popularity continues to rise. One of my favorite aspects of Polymarket is that it allows you to take positions on non-sport events as well, like election results, geopolitical events, and even who the top Spotify artist will be. In case you’re wondering, Bad Bunny is favored over Taylor Swift in that market as I write this. Heck, there’s even a market for the number of tweets Elon Musk will send in a given period of time.

Another key feature of Polymarket is its willingness to accept cryptocurrency as a deposit. When compared to traditional sports betting sites you advertised on television, this is very rare. If you have a crypto wallet or platform like Coinbase, depositing with Polymarket is easy.

New Take on Sports Forecasting

Polymarket is a prediction market platform where participants can simply choose “yes” or “no” on a wide range of markets. Initially focused on big events like the Super Bowl and March Madness, offerings now include regular season games for all major sports. Similar to comparing sports betting odds, users can pick and choose from contract prices for various outcomes.

The rise of Polymarket has been fast. If you read articles about election odds during the last presidential election, there’s a good chance that those odds were derived from Polymarket. Since the team at Polymarket introduced sports betting contracts, the user base has been increasing in a big way. There’s a good amount of liquidity on the most popular offerings, making it easy for participants to enter and exit positions. Looking ahead, there’s nothing to suggest the momentum will slow down. 

User-Friendly and Accessible

Polymarket is available on the desktop as well as iOS and Google Play apps for those who prefer to work from their phone. Upon signing up, you can quickly and easily fund your account with a debit card, credit card, or cryptocurrencies. The platform is very intuitive, and anyone who is familiar with a traditional sportsbook should be able to find their way around the Polymarket platform.

How do Polymarket Prediction Markets Work?

Upon visiting Polymarket, there’s a very large menu of available markets. You’ll realize that this menu contains a lot of non-sports markets like politics or economic events. If you’re looking for sports markets, simply click the “Sports” tab at the top of the screen

The sports section can be broken down further (like on a traditional sportsbook) by each specific sport like NFL, MLB, NBA, etc.

Using MLB as an example, one of the markets available during our test run was on the winner of regular season Marlins vs. Nationals game. The believed outcomes were 58% for the Marlins come out on top, while 43% have conviction in Washington. Polymarket's markets are based on $1 settlements, thus listed prices are percentages rather than odds

You’ll notice the total of the two percentages above equals 101% - or $1.01 when using cents like the platform does - due to the spread, which is based on user demand. Once the event goes final, the winning side is paid out at $1 per contract, while the losing side gets zero. Polymarket takes a small fee based on the market and position size.
