    Key Highlights

+ New Offerings: Kalshi is now offering spread, totals, and prop markets on its platform.

+ Silence: The CFTC had 24 hours to object to these new contracts, but remained silent.

+ Crypto.com: Prediction markets operator Crypto.com is about to launch more sports event contract offerings by expanding its sports department.

Spread And Totals Now Live In The US

On Monday, Kalshi self-certified three new products for its customers: spreads, totals, and props. The offered props market is only for touchdowns at both the player and team levels.

This is in addition to futures contracts already offered on the platform, such as who will win the Super Bowl, and game lines provided for the last six months.

New Kalshi Football Markets
New Markets
SpreadWill (team) win by (above/below/between/exactly/at least) (count) points?
TotalsWill (game) have (over/under) (count) points by (time) of (game)?
PropsWill 'player/team' score (first/last/any/count) touchdown(s) in (time period) of (game)?

The CFTC had until the end of the day yesterday to reject these new contracts, which it did not do. However, the CFTC is in somewhat of a power vacuum with no chair currently in position and three of the five commissioners having resigned over the summer.

Why are they offering these New Markets?

Offering totals, spreads, and props is the next step in prediction markets moving into the sports gambling space. Not only are these some of the more popular markets for sports bettors, but they're also foundational markets when it comes to parlays.

Parlays are the most popular form of gambling in the US. A recent US News survey found that bettors make parlays bets more frequently than moneyline, spread, totals, and prop bets.

So, while Kalshi is seeing incredible growth with its sports event contracts, offering these new markets will only increase that growth.

Court Cases Pending

This development won't sit well with state regulators battling with Kalshi in the courts. Kalshi has open court cases in Maryland, Nevada, and New Jersey.

In Maryland, Kalshi took a hit after a Judge did not grant the company an injunction against a cease-and-desist order. Kalshi filed for an appeal and is waiting for the Court of Appeals to rule on its case.

The company's first courtroom loss was in Nevada and New Jersey, where Kalshi already received an injunction.

Though both cases have seemingly taken a negative turn.

In New Jersey, 34 state Attorneys General, trade groups, and tribal groups have petitioned the court to repeal the injunction and force the Kalshi to play by state rules.

In Nevada, the state's gaming commission has recently asked Kalshi to provide any communication with the CFTC and its likely new chair, Brian Quintenz, as it builds its case against the company.

Don't Forget About Crypto.com

While Kalshi gets all the headlines in the prediction market space, it isn't the only market operator offering sports event contracts. Crypto.com was indeed the first to do so and has announced an expansion of its sports offerings.

Crypto.com's new Managing Director of Sports and Prediction Markets, Chris Fargis, indicated that the company is hiring product roles within his directorate. Expect Crypto.com to offer more sports-oriented prediction markets in the future.
