Grizzlies vs Spurs Picks & Odds Today: Narrow Spread Favors Memphis

The San Antonio Spurs get another crack at the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night after losing by 15 points to the visitors just a few days ago, which helps explain why oddsmakers are listing the Spurs as the two-point betting underdogs (-108) on their home floor.

Here's a spread, moneyline, total, and player prop expert pick for this Southwest Division showdown at the Frost Bank Center on January 17, 2025.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Expert Picks

Memphis Grizzlies ATS -2 (-112), ML (-138)

The two-point spread is a favorable one for basketball bettors, as we just saw this matchup 48 hours ago with a fairly one-sided result. The Grizzlies had six players score 10 or more points, including three off the bench, to defeat San  Antonio for the 14th time in 15 games. The Spurs had dropped 13-straight games to Memphis prior to taking a meaningless encounter on April 9 to conclude the 2023-24 campaign, but before that, San Antonio hadn't prevailed since Dec. 23, 2020.

Memphis is concluding a four-game road trip against Western Conference foes, and hasn't won consecutive outings since Dec. 27, so this could very well be a trap game as the team eyes a return to FedExForum for four in a row on its home floor. On the bright side, the Grizzlies didn't have to travel for this final away game, and their history versus San Antonio paints them in an extravagant light. That helps a player like Ja Morant, as he's listed as questionable with right foot soreness, but we can only assume that he'll play as of Friday morning.

The Spurs' 12-9 home record had much of that success come at the start of the season, as the team is just 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS over their last 10 appearances in their own backyard. They're also 1-4 in both departments across their last five games overall, ranking 22nd in offense (111 points per 100 possessions) and 18th in defense (115.1 points allowed per 100 possessions) during that stretch. Memphis has at least covered the spread in three-straight road games versus formidable competition while winning two of those matchups.

No one wants to lose back-to-back home games against the same team, especially by substantial margins. However, with the spread being as small as it is and knowing how dominant the Grizzlies have been against their division rivals, it's hard not to like their chances to conclude their road trip on a high note.

OVER 239 Total Points (-110)

Memphis owns the top OVER/UNDER away record in basketball at 16-5, having reached the OVER in five-straight on the road and eight of its last nine.

The game on Wednesday hit 244 total points and that was with Victor Wembanyama having a rough night shooting the rock at 5-of-19 from the field for 13 points. It's a lot to ask, but this has the potential to be another high-scoring affair, so let's ride the OVER.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Player Prop

Victor Wembanyama UNDER 25.5 Points (-104)

The aforementioned matchup isn't the only time Wembanyama has failed to put up points against the Grizzlies. He took the floor against them on four occasions during his rookie year and reached an UNDER three times with 20 or fewer points. The one outburst in which the 7-foot-4 Frenchman dropped 31 points was when Memphis was missing a slew of bodies, and obviously Zach Edey with his giant stature wasn't in the league yet.

Even taking the Grizzlies out of the equation entirely, Wembanyama has still gone UNDER in each of his last five appearances for San Antonio, having shot worse than 40 percent in four of those games.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Trends

  • Stephon Castle has failed to exceed 3.5 rebounds in five of his last six games (two rebounds/game average).
  • Devin Vassell has failed to exceed 24.5 points + rebounds in 10 of his last 13 games at home (17.5 points + rebounds/game average).
  • Victor Wembanyama has failed to exceed 28.5 points + assists in five-straight games (20.8 points + assists/game average).
