  • The No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish return home to host the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal with College Football Playoff hopes on the line. Notre Dame has won seven of the last nine home meetings with Stanford and opened this week’s battle as a 4.5-point favorite. These top-10 schools have had an average combined score of 47.4 in their last five games and this week’s total opened at 54 points.

    Shark Bites
    • Stanford is 2-7 SU in its last nine games on the road vs Notre Dame (avg. losing margin: 10.86).
    • Stanford has gone UNDER in six of its last eight games vs Notre Dame.
    • Notre Dame is 8-0 SU in its last eight games at home (avg. winning margin: 16.13).

Stanford vs Notre Dame Game Center

Quarterback change has sparked the Notre Dame Offense

Notre Dame has jumped out to a 4-0 start to the season but won three of those games by eight or fewer points. Granted, among those contests, the Fighting Irish had a game vs then-No. 14 Michigan and hosted an underrated Vanderbilt team, but it also hosted Ball State and only won 24-16. Each of those games had senior Brandon Wimbush as the starting quarterback, but that changed in Week 4 at Wake Forest.

Head coach Brian Kelly handed the reins to junior Ian Book vs the Demon Deacons and the decision appears to be the right one. Through the first three weeks of the season, Notre Dame averaged 23.33 points per game, while they put up 56 points with Book as the man under center, though it is a small sample size. However, the eye test doesn’t lie. Wimbush often made poor reads and consistently missed open receivers, while Book appeared to find those open receivers en route to a decisive victory.

On the season, Wimbush has completed just 55.3 percent of his pass attempts, throwing four interceptions to just one touchdown and failing to eclipse 300 passing yards in a game. Last week, Book went 25-for-34, completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 325 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The California native also tucked the ball in 10 times for 43 yards and three rushing TDs. The Fighting Irish will need a repeat performance from Book if they want to get past a tough Stanford squad.

Stanford 4-0 despite struggling run game

Stanford heads into Week 5 with a perfect 4-0 record, including two wins over ranked opponents. The Cardinal have a remarkable defense, allowing 10 or fewer points through the first three weeks of the season while surrendering 31 points to the high-octane offense of Oregon in Week 4. Although Stanford allows opponents to move the ball, giving up an average of 357 yards per game, which ranks 57th in the nation, its red-zone defense is fantastic as it has surrendered just six touchdowns all season.

The biggest area of concern for the Cardinal is senior running back Bryce Love. The 2017 Heisman Trophy finalist is averaging just 4.3 yards per carry for a total of 254 yards and just two touchdowns this season. The North Carolina native ranks 95th in the nation for rushing yards and Stanford as a squad has the 120th-ranked rushing offense. Luckily, quarterback K.J. Costello has thrown for 1,056 yards, good for 20th-most in the NCAA, with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Stanford did show tremendous heart in its Week 4 overtime victory vs Oregon. The Cardinal trailed the Ducks 24-7 at the half but battled back in the second half to outscore Oregon 24-7 to push the game into overtime. Stanford only needed two plays to end the game – Love rushed for two yards and then Costello found Colby Parkinson for 23 yards and a touchdown for the win.

Is the UNDER the smart bet between Stanford and Notre Dame?

Notre Dame and Stanford have gone UNDER in six of their last eight meetings and Sportsbook has this week’s total Sportsbook at 54 points. The Fighting Irish have gone UNDER in five of their last six games with an average combined score of 49.17. However, those games were with Wimbush as the quarterback and Notre Dame looked like a completely different team with Book under center. The Cardinal have scored 30 or more points in three of their four games this season and Notre Dame allows 145 rushing yards per game, which could be just what Bryce Love needs to get going this season. I don’t think the UNDER is the smart bet for this week.

My take on Notre Dame vs Stanford

I do think the OVER 54 points is the bet to make but I also think Notre Dame can cover the 4.5-point spread. The Fighting Irish have won eight straight home games, going 4-4 ATS over that span, but the Cardinal showed some vulnerability on the road last week vs Oregon, and Notre Dame is a tougher task. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish put up 56 points in their first road game and the first game behind Ian Book. With Notre Dame coming home with a ton of confidence, I think it can break through that tough Cardinal defense and cover 4.5 points.
