For just the fourth time in Super Bowl history two teams were making their Super Bowl debut against each other when the Chicago Bears took on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX. The Chicago Bears were just the second double-digit favorite over the last 16 Super Bowls, entering the game at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans as a 10-point favorite.

Mike Ditka's Chicago Bears became the second team in NFL history to win 15 games in a season, compiling a 15-1 SU record in dominating fashion while outscoring opponents 456-198. The “46 defense” was the most dominant defense in the league, allowing fewer points and total yards than any other team in the NFL, and led the league in interceptions with 34 as well. On offense, Jim McMahon had a solid season with 2,392 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns. But the star of the offense was running back Walter Payton, who rushed for 1,551 yards and received for 483 more, racking up 11 touchdowns in the process.

The New England Patriots finished the regular season third in the AFC East with an 11-5 SU record and entered the postseason as a Wild Card team. With road upsets over the New York Jets, Los Angeles Raiders and Miami Dolphins in the postseason, New England came into the Super Bowl looking like a Cinderella story that might find the magic to beat the seemingly invincible Bears. The Patriots passing game was suspect, but the team had a solid rusher in Craig James and a defense that finished fifth in total yards allowed on the season.

An early Chicago fumble gave New England the ball at the Bears' 19-yard line, and New England took a 3-0 lead just 1:19 into the game. From that point on, it was all Chicago. The Bears scored 44 unanswered points en route to an easy 46-10 blowout win.

Bettors that took a shot on the Cinderella team were sorely disappointed as Chicago covered easily as a 10-point betting favorite. The posted total of 37.5 points was eclipsed by the Bears alone, sending OVER bettors to an easy cash as well.
