As I mentioned above, this game features two elite defensive units. Texas Tech's defense has allowed 10.9 points per game, and Oregon's has surrendered just 16.3 per contest. Those marks rank third and 10th in the nation, respectively. Their offenses have also been electric, with the Red Raiders scoring 42.5 PPG (second) and the Ducks putting up 39.2 PPG (ninth). I'm siding with the defenses over the offenses, however, thanks to both teams' recent total trends.
The under is 5-5 in Oregon's last 10, and 7-3 in Texas Tech's, per our college football database. The Ducks have cashed unders with totals under 45 in that stretch, and some of their overs were against lower-tier opponents or more exploitable defenses, like Oregon State (two wins) and Rutgers (31.8 points allowed per game). Linebackers Bryce Boettcher (113 tackles) and Teitum Tuioti (14 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks) should fly around and limit the Red Raiders' offense from exploding.
Texas Tech's defense also features elite playmakers, including corner Brice Pollock (five interceptions) and linebackers Jacob Rodriguez (117 tackles and seven forced fumbles) and David Bailey (17.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks). Rodriguez played well enough to earn the Nagurski and Bednarik awards, in addition to Heisman consideration and All-American honors. Rodriguez and Co. were big factors in the under cashing as often as it did. The only overs that cashed came against UCF (60th-ranked scoring defense), Kansas State (81st), and Kansas (82nd), with Texas Tech scoring 48, 43, and 42 points, respectively. The Red Raiders will have a lot harder time finding points against the Ducks.
