washington state vs utah State Pick
Bronco Mendenhall’s first season at Utah State has shown progress as the program looks for its first winning season since 2021. The Aggies average 30.3 points per game but a few tight losses in the second-half of the season, including a 29-26 2OT defeat at UNLV, leads me to question their ability to get the job done.
Washington State will enter this matchup transitioning under new head coach, Kirby Moore. But, the theme of the Cougars' season has been inconsistency, failing to string together any win-streak after Week 2. But, when facing a then-No. 4 Ole Miss and then-No. 18 Virginia in consecutive weeks, the Cougars fell by three points or fewer in each outing. Going 7-1 ATS to round out the season, the Cougars can keep this close.
The Aggies will be shorthanded after losing their top receiver, Braden Pegan (926 YDs), to the transfer portal. That's a huge blow to QB Bryson Barnes, who threw for 2,687 yards. Luckily, the senior is just as reliable on his legs, leading the team in rushing with 733 yards and nine scores. But, that now makes Utah State's offense, averaging a top-50 404 yards per game, much more one dimensional. Running the ball more always soaks up the clock.
I wouldn't rely on the Cougars offense to drive up the score much, posting just 310 total yards on the road this season and ranking outside the top 100 in passing (195.8 YPG) and rushing (129 YPG). Hitting the UNDER in eight straight, their defense can hang. Similarly, Utah State cashed the UNDER in five of its last six.
