Vikings vs Rams Wild Card Picks
Rams ML (+100) at Sportsbook
The Vikings finished the season 14-3, but their final game vs Detroit certainly didn't match up to their success on paper. Minny floundered in the red zone, failing to score a touchdown, and a wounded Lions defense put pressure on Sam Darnold and wrapped up Vikings receivers in the secondary. If Detroit's broken defensive unit can mess with Darnold, L.A.'s functional defense could cause some serious damage.
Darnold looked terrible in Week 18 (18-for-41, 166 yards). He airmailed passes, and when the Lions got pressure, he panicked. That's a terrible recipe for postseason success. It appears Darnold is seeing ghosts again. This is terrible timing, too, as Matthew Stafford is one of the coolest vets in the game. He has Super Bowl-winning experience, which should help him stave off a strong Minnesota pass rush to find his talented wideouts down the field.
Darnold has never started a postseason game. Meanwhile, Stafford averages 308 passing yards and 3 TDs per postseason game. He's a beast this time of year, and I anticipate the Rams winning a close game. Take Los Angeles ML at even money and call it a day.
Vikings vs Rams Wild Card News
There is no bigger news than the Los Angeles wild fires. It has devastated and dislocated many residents of the city and understandably has impacted the sports world as well. Earlier this week, the Lakers and Kings both had games postponed and now this Wild Card game is moving from Los Angeles to Arizona for a neutral site game.
Aside from the Super Bowl, this is just the second time in NFL history that an NFL playoff game was moved, however, the first time was in the 1936 NFL championship game per USA Today. At that time the championship was held at a home team field but in this case, poor ticket sales led the game to move from Boston to D.C. and what would have been the home team, Boston, lost 21-6 to Green Bay. Will we see this "trend" occur again with the Rams' home field advantage going away and a loss on neutral site occurs?
Also, for you keen folks that hopped on this game early in the week, note that most sportsbooks have voided existing bets so be sure to go back on your app and place a wager again if you're so inclined.
Vikings vs Rams Wild Card Props
Stafford OVER 235.5 Passing Yards (-114) at Sportsbook
I just laid out Stafford's playoff averages. He averages over 300 yards per playoff game. Now, the veteran QB faces a Vikings secondary that yields plenty of yards, even if they are stingy on passing touchdowns. During the regular season, Minnesota allowed 265 passing yards per game, the fourth-worst mark in football.
If this game becomes a shootout like I expect, Stafford should chuck the ball 35+ times. With his arm strength and Puka Nacua somewhere downfield, that bodes well for the OVER yards prop.
