The Houston Astros will do battle with the Seattle Mariners again tonight as they chase the M’s for the AL West Division lead. The Astros are trailing the surprising Mariners by two games and will send righty Lance McCullers Jr. to the bump to try to stifle a Seattle squad that has won 14 of its last 16 games. McCullers may be the man for the job as he owns a 1.97 ERA in five home starts this season and shut down this Mariners squad back in mid-April, holding them to one hit and one earned run. The Astros opened as -190 favorites to bounce back and close the gap on Seattle.
The Mariners have continued to win since Robinson Cano got popped for a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. Since Cano got suspended, Seattle is 14-5 SU and will send Wade LeBlanc to the mound to try to stifle the Astros’ sluggers. LeBlanc owns a 1.72 ERA in six starts this season and has not allowed more than two runs in any start. In his last appearance, he yielded only four hits and one earned run vs the Rangers that led to the 6-1 win. The Mariners are 10-1 SU in their last 11 games with LeBlanc as their starter.
But LeBlanc does have some warts when facing the Astros lineup as he has bounced from the rotation to the bullpen this season. Bettors should be aware that when he took the mound vs Houston in two relief appearances in April, he got knocked around by allowing four earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.
This is where Lance McCullers needs to come up big and halt the Mariners’ momentum. The right-hander has been great vs Seattle with a 2.75 ERA over 10 career starts and has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine starts. However, the Astros offense has not been as explosive at home (4.01 runs per game) as it was last season (5.20 runs per game) and Houston is hoping that activating outfielder Josh Reddick from the DL could provide a spark in the lineup as the Astros are 7-7 SU in his absence.
The total opened at 8 and totals bettors have started to cash in on the OVER when these two teams collide. The OVER has hit in three straight games in this matchup with an average combined score of 9 runs per game.
