  • A couple of avoidable results have taken the Pittsburgh Steelers’ playoff hopes out of their own hands and into the hands of Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield. A Week 1 tie plus losses in Denver and Oakland leave the Steelers with a difficult path to the playoffs in Week 17. Pittsburgh needs a win plus a Browns win over Baltimore to win the AFC North. A wild-card berth is impossible.

    Pittsburgh is favored by more than two touchdowns over division rival Cincinnati at home this Sunday, and while the Steelers have been a profitable spread bet this year at 8-6-1 ATS, they are 2-9 ATS as a favorite of 14 points or more since 1992 – with both ATS wins coming in 2010. Pittsburgh won the first meeting this season 28-21.

    Oddsmakers Are Asking a Lot From Pittsburgh Bettors

    With a spread that opened as high as 17 points at some books for this game, it’s very difficult to ask Pittsburgh to cover such a high spread. The number has since settled to 14 or 14.5, depending on where you shop, but even still, that’s rarefied air for both teams.

    Our database shows the Steelers as 2-9 ATS in just 11 instances of closing as a favorite of 14 points or higher since 1992. Both of those ATS wins came in 2010, the same season they lost the Super Bowl to Green Bay in Dallas.

    Mike Tomlin’s team is just 3-6-1 ATS as the favorite this season, and 0-1 ATS as a double-digit favorite – Pittsburgh laid 10 points in Oakland and lost straight up.

    Bengals Had a Sick BackDoor Cover vs Cleveland in Week 16

    Recency bias will play a factor for Bengals bettors this week as it looked like the Browns were home free to cover the 10 points this past week until the Bengals put up an 18-spot in the fourth, hitting one of the worst (best?) backdoor covers of this NFL season depending on who you were betting on.

    In fact, that made the Bengals 2-for-2 in covering double-digit spreads as the underdog this season. They covered +16.5 at the Chargers in Week 14 in Los Angeles, making them not only 2-for-2 covering double-digit spreads this season, but 2-for-2 on the road as well. They’ll get a shot at the hat trick in Pennsylvania in Week 17.

    Driskel’s Been All right

    Without A.J. Green to throw the ball to, Jeff Driskel has actually been pretty good as the fill-in for the injured Andy Dalton. In six games since Dalton was lost for the season, Driskel has thrown for six touchdowns and has only been picked off twice.

    He’s gotten support from Joe Mixon in the run game and the Bengals have managed to remain competitive down the stretch without arguably their two best players. Cincinnati was blown out just twice this season, incidentally by two of the best quarterbacks in the league in Drew Brees and Patrick Mahomes.

    My Pick for This Game

    I may live to regret this, but I like the Bengals +14.5 this week. I don’t think they’re a good bet on the moneyline or anything, but they’ve managed to keep games close and Pittsburgh hasn’t exactly been able to put away opponents early. I think the Bengals are able to keep this one close while the Steelers have one eye on their opponent and one eye on the out-of-town scoreboard.
