There's a chance Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers might not get to defend their Super Bowl championship in 2012, but bettors still need to know they're the current co-favorite on the Super Bowl futures at Sportsbook.
It was only a few months ago that the Packers upset the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. Right now, though, the only NFL battle is the lockout being waged in boardrooms and courtrooms, leaving next season in doubt. Bettors should remember, however, that a Super Bowl has never been canceled due to a work stoppage, so making futures bets on Super Bowl XLVI should not be considered a waste of time.
The Packers are the defending Super Bowl champs, but the Sportsbook oddsmakers currently have them on a level playing field with the New England Patriots. Both powerhouses are currently listed at 7/1 on the Sportsbook Super Bowl futures.
The Packers have the makings of another Super Bowl dynasty. It may seem like Rodgers has been around for a long time, but he's only 27 years old and entering his prime as an NFL quarterback. Rodgers is flanked by weapons like Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, and Jermichael Finley, so the Packers' offense should continue to be lethal for years to come. The Green Bay defense had an up-and-down season a year ago but they're also loaded with talent, with Charles Woodson, B.J. Raji, and Clay Matthews just a few of the notable names.
The Patriots might be being graded more on reputation than on current performance, but this is still Bill Belichick and Tom Brady's team and that makes them a contender. Just look at Brady's numbers last season – 3,900 yards, 36 TDs, and just four interceptions. Brady appears to be getting more accurate with age, and his skill-set has made players like Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead into stars. The emergence of BenJarvus Green-Ellis along with Woodhead last year in the running game makes the Patriots' offense even more dangerous.
Other than a lockout wiping out the season the toughest thing standing in the Patriots' path to another Super Bowl is the large number of legitimate contenders in the AFC. Pittsburgh (11/1), San Diego (12/1), Baltimore (14/1), Indianapolis (14/1), and the Jets (14/1) all have a real shot at Super Bowl XLVI. The Steelers represented the AFC in the big game last season, and with Ben Roethlisberger and their smashmouth defense back they could easily get back there again.
The Chargers have all the talent in the world, but continually fail to live up to expectations. Phillip Rivers is among the elite quarterbacks in the league, but he hasn't been able to get San Diego over the hump in the postseason - and the regular season was even a challenge last year due to brutal special teams and a unreliable defense.
The Ravens and Colts seem to be contenders every season. Baltimore fields one of the best defenses every season, and it looked like their offense was finally ready to deliver as well last year before a few hiccups. Behind QB Joe Flacco they have plenty of talent (Ray Rice, Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason), but that didn't stop them from continually blowing leads last season.
Indianapolis will continue to live and die behind Peyton Manning and their suspect defense. Manning's receiving corps was decimated by injuries last season, but if Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, and Dallas Clark can stay healthy alongside Reggie Wayne the Colts should be lethal again.

After four games in the NFL season, oddsmakers haven't been able to decide whether the Jets, Ravens, Steelers or Packers deserve top billing in Super Bowl future odds.
So at the moment, the four teams are at +800 or 8/1 odds.
The Jets have remained at +800 at Sportsbook and they have looked good winning three straight after losing their season opener. Mark Sanchez has been solid and the rushing offense has looked great with new addition LeDainian Tomlinson, who looks to have plenty left in his tank.
After being the top ranked defense last season they have slipped ranking 15th in the league after week four and while they have been awesome defending the pass their pass defense has struggled.

The Ravens are at +800 at Sportsbook after being at +1000 at the beginning of June. Joe Flacco snapped out of his early season slump and their defense is ranked fifth in the league, but they have struggled against the run. RB Ray Rice is struggling a bit, but if he gets back to form and Flacco keeps playing well Baltimore can go all the way.
Sportsbook has the Steelers at +800 after being at +1500 at the beginning of June. Pittsburgh went 3-1 without Ben Roethlisberger in the lineup including losing to the Ravens in a close game. The Steelers defense and rushing offense has been solid and with Big Ben coming back the Pittsburgh passing attack should be much better.
The Packers are at +800 at Sportsbook after being at +1000 in the beginning of June. Aaron Rodgers has played great and the defense has been solid, but the rushing offense is a concern since they lost RB Ryan Grant for the season with a knee injury.
The Patriots have improved from +1200 before the season to a current +1000 at Sportsbook. Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offense has been doing their job, but the New England defense only ranks 28th in the league and their secondary has really struggled.
Most sportsbooks have the defending champion Saints at +1000, which is a slight drop form the +900 they were at on June 9th. Drew Brees has kept up his end of the bargain, but the New Orleans’ rushing attack has not and the defense only ranks 20th in the league.
The Cowboys are still in the mix in the tough NFC East, but they are only 1-2 after four weeks this season (bye week) and their rushing offense has not produced. Still, Dallas has the league’s second ranked defense and Tony Romo is putting up big numbers.
Other teams that have good betting odds at Sportsbook are the Colts (+1200) Falcons (+1200), Vikings (+1500), Texans (+1500), and Chargers (+1500).
