Week 16 NFL Betting Picks, Trends and Stats Primer

A few weeks ago, I wrote about trying to find an edge late in the season based on motivational factors of teams either making a push for the playoffs or potentially tanking to improve their draft position. There was a little bit of a nugget there, but using the same criteria of looking at matchups between teams that are well out of playoff contention vs teams that are still in the mix specific to Weeks 16 and 17, I found some surprising results.

Over the past two seasons, teams that are three games below .500 or worse are 17-9-1 ATS (65.3 percent) vs teams at .500 or better. Going further back to 2011, the percentage drops off a bit but is still profitable at 54 percent.

Here’s the spots where you can bet this in Week 16:

  • Bucs at Cowboys
  • Giants at Colts
  • Lions hosting Vikings
  • Jaguars at Dolphins
  • Bills at Patriots
  • 49ers hosting Bears
  • Cardinals hosting Rams

I think the general assumption at this time of year might be that teams that are out of it aren’t giving their best effort, but we must keep in mind that these players and coaches have a lot on the line. Some coaches are trying to hang on to their jobs, while others are looking to get promoted. There’s lots of players hoping to make a good impression to stay on a roster while others have expiring contracts and will be looking to cash in as free agents.

Good luck in Week 16 and no matter what holiday you celebrate, I wish you peace, happiness, a fridge full of ICE-COLD BEER and a pocket full of cash!
