Best Bet To Miss Playoffs: New York Rangers (-155)

Two weeks ago, I said the New York Rangers were a good bet to make the playoffs, but since then, the Blueshirts have crumbled, losing six of their next eight games.

Despite having a lineup full of top-notch goal scorers like Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad, the Rangers find themselves 30th in the league for scoring with 22 goals. Only the Calgary Flames are worse with 20 goals.

The dysfunction that sank the Rangers last year is still lingering around, it seems. I guess that's what happens when a dysfunctional team acquires a player who was jettisoned out of Vancouver for the dysfunction he brought, and made him captain. Yes, I'm talking about J.T. Miller.

New York has more than enough talent to make the playoffs, but just like last year, I don't think they can get out of their own way.

Best Bet To Make The Playoffs: Ottawa Senators (-145)

The underlying numbers suggest the Ottawa Senators are playing some of the best hockey in the NHL. Their 5on5 Corsi rate is the third-best in the league at 55.14% and their 5on5 expected goals rate is the sixth-best in the league at 54.08%.

What had been getting in the way of results was goaltending. Starting goalie Linus Ullmark had a rough start to the season, averaging a poor 3.80 goals against average and 0.854 save percentage. However, it seems like the tide has changed for Ullmark. Over his last two starts, both wins by the way, he averaged a 1.00 goals against average and 0.944 save percentage.

I know it's a small sample size, but if it's indicated that Ottawa will get the Ullmark we saw dominate for three years in Boston, they'll make the playoffs.

Best OVER Bet: Chicago Blackhawks 75.5 (-108)

I hope you all backed me when I said the Chicago Blackhawks would get more than 67.5 points at +105 two weeks ago. Since I made that statement, the Hawks have gone 4-2-1 and hold a 0.556 points percentage on the season.

That points percentage might not be good enough for the playoffs, but it would be good enough to net 91 points on the season. Easily smashing both their 67.5 points total from the start of the season and the improved 75.5 points total today.

Connor Bedard is easily the team's best player, but he's finally got support. Rookie Frank Nazar has burst on the scene, scoring nine points in 10 games to lead the team in production. Goalie Spencer Knight looks like the guy Florida drafted 13th overall in 2019, holding a glowing 1.97 goals against average and a 0.937 save percentage.

The Hawks aren't going to be "good," but they'll be good enough for you to make some money betting on their points total.

Best UNDER Bet: Dallas Stars 106.5 (-110)

The quintet of Mikko Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson, and Thomas Harley is the only thing keeping the Dallas Stars afloat right now. These four players have helped the Stars outscore their problems on the ice and have kept them winning.

However, with the injury bug mounting, with Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene, and now Roope Hintz, the quality on Dallas's bench grows thin. And it's not as if starting goalie Jake Oettinger is helping his team. With 1.1 goals saved above expected, Oettinger ranks 30th for game-saving stops amongst 68 goalies.

Can Dallas be a good team by the end of the year? Sure. But this bet is asking if the Dallas Stars, who had 106 points last year, can be better than in 24-25. With a growing list of injuries and Oettinger's poor play, I doubt they'll be better. Take the UNDER.
