Detroit Tigers vs Oakland Athletics ML and UNDER 6.5

Close to 30 games into the season, the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics find themselves at the bottom of the American League standings. One of the biggest reasons has been the hitting of both teams – or to be more precise, the lack thereof.

The Tigers rank dead last in runs per game (2.8), 27th in hits per game (7.0), are tied for 25th in average (.215) and sit dead last in home runs (11). They have lost six straight games and don’t appear to be getting out of this funk any time soon.

This afternoon, the Athletics have right-hander Frankie Montas taking the bump. Montas is having a very good year to this point, pitching 36.2 innings with a 3.44 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. He has also had a ton of success against the Tigers, winning each of his last three starts vs Detroit, throwing at least six innings and recording seven-plus strikeouts in each of them.

The Athletics’ hitting hasn’t been much better than Detroit’s. The A’s rank 27th in runs scored (3.4), 29th in hits per game (6.5), 29th in average (.200) and tied for 24th in home runs (20). Their leading home run hitter has just four.

If the poor hitting from both sides didn’t convince you, here are a few more stats that favor the UNDER tonight. Detroit has gone UNDER in each of its last five games. The Tigers have also gone UNDER in five of their last six vs an AL West Division opponent. Oakland has gone UNDER in four of its last five games and has also gone UNDER in four of the last six vs an AL Central opponent.

Both teams are putting out solid pitchers for Game 1 of a doubleheader. They also both struggle to hit. I suggest straight betting both but I love the UNDER and the Athletics in this one.

Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Before last night’s Pittsburgh victory, the Dodgers had won 16 straight games against the Pirates. I expect a massive bounce-back from the Dodgers in a series they do not want to lose.

The Dodgers have rebounded after a loss quite well this season, going 5-2 on the runline in the games following a defeat. The Dodgers have also played incredibly well at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, winning seven of their last eight.

Bryse Wilson gets the start for the Pirates, and although he pitched very well in his first start against the Dodgers, they are now more familiar with his stuff. Tony Gonsolin gets the nod for the Dodgers, and he has gotten off to a great start to his campaign, sitting at 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 22 innings of work.

Looking at how these teams compare, there isn’t much of a comparison. The Dodgers rank in the top half in nearly every statistical category, whether it’s pitching, hitting or baserunning. The Pirates rank in the bottom half in nearly every category.

The Dodgers don’t want to throw away this series and allow the Padres to gain more ground on them. I think the Dodgers get the bats going from the jump and win this one convincingly.

The Pick: Dodgers -1.5 -140

Miami Marlins vs Arizona Diamondbacks UNDER 8

I absolutely love the UNDER in tonight’s Miami-Arizona game. The Marlins have struggled to score runs on the road, while the Diamondbacks have struggled to score runs at home.

The Marlins send out Jesus Luzardo, a 24-year-old lefty who is 2-2 and coming off two quality starts. Luzardo went six strong last week against the Padres, striking out seven batters while allowing just two earned runs, three walks and three hits.

A pleasant surprise for the Diamondbacks early on in the season has been veteran pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who has recorded a 1-1 record with a 1.50 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 24 innings of work.

Both pitchers have gotten off to tremendous starts. If that doesn’t sway you, here are more trends that favor the UNDER. Miami has gone UNDER in 12 of its 16 road games this season. Arizona has gone UNDER in 13 of its 16 home games (one of those games was a PUSH). The total has also gone UNDER in four of the last five games for both Miami and Arizona.

The last time one of these teams played in a game that went OVER 8 runs was May 4. We’re getting great value on this one at plus odds. Take the UNDER.

The Pick: UNDER 8 +105
