NFL Preseason Betting Report

NFL Preseason Betting Trends

NFL preseason betting records may not tell the full story, but the win-loss statistics are a barometer of which teams will compete come August. If you're laying units on preseason action, understanding how each NFL team and their coach fares is of utmost importance.

Numerous coaches buck the trend of leaving starters rooted to the bench, preferring to keep their guys prepped and ready for the journey to come. While others are far more cautious and keep all of their stars (and their backups) out of the crosshairs before the real action gets underway.

Keep in mind this is the fourth season in which there are just three preseason games instead of four, so this year's Week 3 will act more like the traditional Week 4 from an NFL betting perspective, and the final tune-up before the regular season kicks off. Below, I'll break down each and every NFL team's preseason betting history as we hunt for value on the road toward the 2025 edition.

NFL Preseason Betting Trends

Underdogs are all the rage in the preseason. But, bettors need to be careful about which lines they target. Since 2015, underdogs of +1 to +3 points have covered at a 60% clip.

Roads dogs of +2.5 or less are a cash cow in the NFL preseason, going 75-38 ATS over the last 10 years.

While most NFL bettors know to not overreact to a blowout victory, big wins have provided huge momentum in the preseason. In fact, teams coming off a 20+ point victory are 23-7 SU and an astounding 17-10-2 ATS the next week over the past 12 years.

There has been a totals bonanza in the preseason with 37 marking the key number. Over the past 15 years, preseason totals of 37 or less have gone OVER close to 60% of the time. While those closing at more 37 have hit the UNDER at a 56% rate.

NFL Preseason Betting Trends by Team

Atlanta has gone 0-6-1 SU in their past five preseason games, and are 2-5 ATS in that time.

After a wondrous preseason run, the Baltimore Ravens are on a 5-4 SU and 2-7 ATS streak as sportsbooks have caught up to John Harbaugh's preseason record.

The Chicago Bears are an impressive 9-2-1 SU and 10-2 ATS in their past 12 preseason games, with the OVER going 8-4.

Cincinnati has gone 1-9-1 SU and just 4-7 ATS in their last 11 preseason games, as Zac Taylor and the Bengals hold their starters out for regular season action.

Kevin Stefanski's Cleveland Browns have lost six of their last eight NFL preseason contests, going 3-5 ATS in those games.

Fade Dallas and take the UNDER in Cowboys preseason games. Since 2008, Jerry Jones' squad is 7-24 SU and 9-21-1 ATS with the UNDER going 19-10-2. Even with the arrival of George Pickens, I'm fading the Boys offense in August.

For some strange reason, the Detroit Lions struggle at home in the preseason, going 2-9 both SU and ATS in their last 11 games. However, the OVER is 8-3 in those contests.

Be on the lookout for the Texans away from home in August. Houston is 6-2 both SU and ATS in their last eight road preseason games.

Maybe home isn't where the heart is for the Chargers, who are just 1-9 SU and 3-7 ATS in their past 10 preseason contests at home.

Fade the points when New England kicks off this preseason, as the UNDER has hit in 15 of the last 22 Patriots contests.

Aaron Glenn's New York Jets are 8-2 both SU and ATS in their last 10 preseason games away from home. Including a 30-10 shellacking of the Packers in Week 1. The Jets are worth a look on the road with Justin Fields at the helm.

The UNDER has smacked in nine of the last 14 Seahawks home preseason games. With Mike MacDonald's defense looking especially menacing heading into 2025, Seattle UNDERs are a great play.

Fade Todd Bowles' Tampa Bay Buccaneers in August. The Bucs are just 8-14 SU and 7-15 ATS in the preseason since 2013.

The above chart is sorted by all-time preseason wins, so naturally the most experienced coaches rise to the top. But, diving into the preseason betting trends a bit further, here are some takeaways:

Baltimore's Harbaugh Is a Preseason Legend

Maybe it's Baltimore's depth? Maybe it's coaching? Maybe it's straight luck? The Baltimore Ravens under John Harbaugh have been an absolute wagon during the NFL's preseason. They're 42-21 against the spread all-time.

There are few people I trust more than John Harbaugh in the preseason, so take his impressive record into consideration when betting on the NFL preseason. But, as noted above books have caught up to Harbaugh's impressive preseason record and adjusted. Be sure to keep this in mind.

Quinn's Commanders An Automatic Preseason Fade

Last year's NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels is unlikely to play at all this preseason, giving bettors even more reason to fade the Washington Commanders. Dan Quinn's squad is a brutal 3-7 ATS in their last 10 preseason home games.

Quinn is 7-17-1 ATS in the preseason across two head coaching stints after Washington was demolished by a score of 48-18 in New England. Fading Quinn's Commanders is a cheat code in August, so be sure to take advantage with our best NFL betting sites, and all of our NFL promos

Fade Brian Daboll's Giants in Preseason

The Giants have been a mixed bag under Brian Daboll, overachieving to win nine games during his first season at the helm, before faltering under a plethora of injuries to finish 6-11 last year.

However, they've been awful in the preseason, going 3-8 ATS. Although, perhaps experienced backup Jameis Winston and rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart will give the G-Men a chance to finally break that streak this season. That being said, be aware of Daboll's prior history in August before making your wagers. The Giants are a dumpster fire, and should be treated as such, even in the preseason.

Other coaches to target:

  • Sean McDermott: now a fantastic 15-10 ATS
