4 Nations Face-Off Odds: Team USA Is The Best Bet

The NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off is about to kick off, looking to crown the top hockey nation.

We've got updated 4 Nations Face-Off odds from Sportsbook before the tournament kicks off on February 12th, with USA a +145 favorite, just ahead of Canada at +155.

The Americans are, rightfully, the favorites with a near-perfect roster. But, can Canada compete or maybe Finland/Sweden will upset?

Why USA Is The Best Bet In 4 Nations Face-Off Odds

The Americans should be far more than narrow favorites in this tournament. USA has a near-perfect roster, with scoring and grit in the forward group, a dynamic defense, and easily the best  quality between the pipes with Vezina Trophy-caliber goalies like two-time winner Connor Hellebuyck leading. Just look at how all three of America's goalies have performed this year:

America Goalie Stats
GoalieSV%GAA
Connor Hellebuyck2.040.925
Jake Oettinger2.310.912
Jeremy Swayman2.950.898

Beyond their strong goaltending, the Americans have Auston Matthews who is the games' best goal scorer with 69 goals in 81 games last season, as well as a good group of 100-point players like Matthew Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, and Jack Hughes.

While potential Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes could miss the tournament, the Americans still have Charlie McAvoy, Adam Fox, and Zach Werenski on D.

Canada has dominated many international tournaments, but the Americans have an objectively better roster right now.

Can Canada Win The 4 Nations Face-Off?

Canada has dominated the international ice hockey stage for a while now, winning gold in three of the last four Winter Olympics and taking the top trophy at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016. Oh, and since the 2015-16 NHL season four of the 10 highest-scoring players are Canadian — Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby, and Brad Marchand.

But there's a massive weak link that will hold Canada back in this tournament: goaltending. Adin Hill, Jordan Binnington, and Sam Montembeault represent the weakest Canadian backstop group we've seen since NHL players started playing in these international tournaments. None of them are having even a good season, with Hill's league-average performance the best Canada can get.

Canadian Goalie Stats
GoalieSV%GAA
Adin Hill2.690.900
Jordan Binnington2.830.899
Samuel Montembeault2.990.898

Adin Hill did power the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup two years ago with a .932 save percentage in the playoffs. So, maybe he gets hot for a few games. But, unless Canada randomly gets a stellar few starts from a goalie, they're cooked in the 4 Nations Face-Off. I'm not betting them at this price.

4 Nations Face-Off Value Pick: Finland

Finland is rarely the most talented roster at an international tournament but they make up for that by being the hardest-working squad. The Finns have a foundation built around two-way stars like Aleksander Barkov and Sebastian Aho, who can control the pace of the game, frustrate, and outwork their opponents.

They also have a high-variance goaltender in Juuse Saros set to start in net. We've seen him be the best in the league at points, but he's having a down year with a brutal Nashville Predators squad this season. If we see the best of Saros, he's right up there with USA's Hellebuyck.

Because of how short this tournament is, a single game can change everything and the Finns have the talent to pull off one or two upsets. While Finland's odds are long at +950, there's a lot of value here if they can get a surprise result.
