The Boston Celtics are entering what can only be defined as a "gap year," understanding full and well that any chance they had of contending for an NBA championship went down the drain the moment superstar Jayson Tatum tore his achilles in the playoffs. That set off a chain of events resulting in numerous members of the 2024 title team being shipped off to provide financial flexibility and reduce the franchise's tax burden.
This 2025-26 season preview runs down all betting odds pertaining to a Celtics team that's perhaps undergone more changes than any other team across the Association, none of which have put them in a position to continue winning a ton of games while Tatum recovers.

Boston is now a shell of its former self, at least for this upcoming campaign. The question now becomes whether or not what remains of its core is good enough to make some noise in a relatively pedestrian Eastern Conference, and the easy answer after looking up and down the depth chart is no. A frontcourt which relied on just a handful of guys for production has been ravaged beyond recognition, leaving the heavy lifting to a backcourt group of Derrick White and reigning Sixth Man of the Year recipient Payton Pritchard, along with former Finals Most Valuable Player Jaylen Brown.
Anfernee Simons is an intriguing addition after averaging better than 19 points each of the last three seasons in Rip City, but his tenure in Beantown may be short-lived with the front office reportedly seeking to move him and his $27-million expiring contract before February's trade deadline. Beyond these aforementioned names, there's no real sense of who else is capable of contributing. While there could be some diamonds in the rough like Neemias Queta and Chris Boucher who stand out in expanded roles, they're still tiers below the likes of now former bigs Kristaps Porzingis and veteran Al Horford, and that's being kind.
You simply can't bet on the Celtics because they're not even betting on themselves. In a perfect world, the pieces around White, Pritchard, and Brown would use this year to develop into above-average and trustworthy rotation pieces for when Tatum is healthy. The six-time All-Star is already back on the court after undergoing surgery in May, and while there's a renewed sense of optimism that he'll be able to return sooner than anticipated, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens isn't willing to put a timetable on Tatum and could ultimately elect to err on the side of caution when it comes to his recovery. While it seems blasphemous to say, missing out on the postseason and not adding any unnecessary mileage would also be a net positive for Boston moving forward, so until its intentions are clear, it's best to steer clear.

Best Bet: UNDER 41.5 wins, -124
The Celtics and the city they call home are synonymous with winning, with the team having strung together 10-straight seasons of .500 or better basketball. This projected win total set by oddsmakers has Boston barely above that, and that's due to the high degree of uncertainty over if it cares to win at all this year.
Even should the team put its best foot forward from the end of October to the middle of April, as previously mentioned, you can debate if most of the names surrounding the White-Pritchard-Brown group are even NBA-caliber players, and that's going to impact what appears in the win-loss column. Wearing green and white is a huge responsibility, but as painful as it may be to realize, this season equates to a hit 2000's chart-topper by Linkin Park. In the end, it doesn't even matter.

Best Bet: Payton Pritchard for NBA Sixth Man of the year, +3500
Only two players in league history have ever won consecutive Sixth Man of the Year awards, and the feat has only been accomplished once (Lou Williams in 2018, 2019) since 1986. Part of the reason why Pritchard became the fourth player in Celtics history to receive the honor was because he conjured up career-best numbers across the board, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while converting 47.2 percent from the field. It didn't hurt that Boston was one of just three teams to win at least 60 games either, so trying to topple such a phenomenal year is an ambitious undertaking.
Pritchard earned 82 of a possible 100 first-place votes, and the runner-up Malik Beasley's (13 first-place votes) future is currently in limbo due to some off-court issues. He averaged double-digit shot attempts for the first time in his young career, and that number should only continue to go up since someone has to make up for the 20.1 shots Tatum was taking per contest. The issue here, though, is that reports have emerged suggesting that Pritchard may be inserted into the starting lineup. If that ends up being the case, then obviously the trajectory of this bet would plummet. That would also explain why Simons has identical odds as of writing, even though the rotation hasn't been set in stone as of yet. Simons is also a prime candidate to be moved at some point ahead of the deadline, which should sink his value in the coming months.
