DeMar DeRozan, Sacramento Kings

Sacramento Kings 2025-26 NBA Season Preview, Betting Odds

The Sacramento Kings have long had a reputation for being a poorly-managed, underachieving, and fruitless basketball franchise that still hasn't quite figured out the formula for success in nearly two decades. Replicating the makeup of another team which encountered similar struggles by bringing together DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine was deservedly criticized upon completion, and what it's done is create a pessimistic outlook for the upcoming campaign, knowing full well from experience that the team's ceiling can't possibly be that high if those two are focal points.

This 2025-26 season preview will analyze all betting odds for the Kings as they attempt to qualify for the playoffs for just the second time since 2007 with a new general manager in Scott Perry calling the shots and a full year of head coach Doug Christie on the sidelines.

Best Bet: N/A

The gap between where the Kings are in the Western Conference and where they'd obviously like to be is much larger than some may realize for a team which just secured the No. 9 seed with a 40-42 record. Eight games separated them and the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies, and while Sacramento was 27-24 under Christie once former coach Mike Brown was relieved of his duties, during that 51-game window, they were the epitome of average with a net rating of exactly zero, which was actually worse than the net rating of 1.6 the team had with Brown. Now teams like the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks which finished beneath the Kings in the standings are projected to leap them in 2025-26, so what was already a perilous path back to even the play-in bracket is now even more arduous with even more teams jockeying for position.

Looking up and down the roster, it's incredibly apparent how Sacramento doesn't have anyone with a mind for defense. The combination of DeRozan, LaVine, and Domantas Sabonis allowed more than 120 points per 100 possessions when they were on the floor together, and as a whole, the Kings were the only team to finish with a top-10 offense (115.9 points per 100 possessions, 7th) while also allowing more than 114 points per 100 possessions (115.3, 22nd) on the other end. The key acquisitions made over the summer in EuroBasket Most Valuable Player Dennis Schroder and eight-year pro Dario Saric won't make much of a difference in that department, if any, and that's a major problem for a team that has no problem scoring, but offers little resistance in giving it right back. Schroder is also no De'Aaron Fox, nor is he like another point guard whose since found superstardom after departing the team like Tyrese Haliburton. The recent signing of former league Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook also feels like a last resort for both team and player alike, although Sacramento could certainly use the depth at the position.

Across 188 total games together, the DeRozan-LaVine tandem has an overall record of 95-93, and with two years remaining on his initial three-year, $70-million deal, the 36-year-old DeRozan could be dangled as a trade chip around February's deadline should Sacramento be floundering as anticipated. None of the Association's other 29 teams have played fewer playoff games than the Kings in the last 20 years at 15, which is two fewer than the woeful Charlotte Hornets. That number won't be going up anytime soon until Sacramento prioritizes its future instead of treading water in the present, banking on one-dimensional names while failing to flesh out the team with specialists or players who an offer help in other areas beyond putting the ball through the hoop.

Best Bet: UNDER 34.5 wins, -110

DeRozan, LaVine, Sabonis, Malik Monk, and Keegan Murray are all back, yet oddsmakers are projecting a roughly seven-win drop year over year for Sacramento, which is mainly attributed to some of its competitors improving while its failed to make up any ground through free agency or trades. The Kings barely missed out on three-straight seasons of winning basketball in 2024-25, but cracking 40 victories again is feeling more and more like a long shot barring some sort of dramatic shift in identity and personnel.

Scratching and clawing for a play-in spot does Sacramento no good, and it will hopefully come to terms with that soon. In the meantime, it's not a strong use of your units to believe in anything positive stemming from this season.

Best Bet: DeMar DeRozan for NBA Clutch Player of the year, +2500

This fresh hardware feels like it was custom made for someone like DeRozan, whose found himself finishing near the top for total clutch points in a season for six-straight years. He registered 132 clutch points (points scored during the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score differential is five points or less) on 44.1-percent shooting across 151 minutes, ranking five amongst all players in that department. That was actually his worst finish during this stretch, as the veteran finished second each of the previous three seasons.

There are currently nine other players with shorter odds than DeRozan as of writing, and the Kings' win-loss record should have a profound impact on how many votes he ultimately garners, even if he ends up being a top-five finish in total clutch points once again. There's a slew of players grouped together at 25-to-1 with DeRozan, as well, so while this offers some of the stronger value you'll find for anyone on the roster, it's still very much a shot in the dark.
