Indiana Pacers 2025-26 NBA Season Preview, Betting Odds

A run to the NBA Finals which went deeper than anyone could have anticipated was the unofficial coronation and elevation of the Indiana Pacers to another tier amongst other legitimate title contenders. Sadly, an injury to Tyrese Haliburton in Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder has put an indefinite pause on the team's championship aspirations.

This 2025-26 season preview will dissect all betting odds pertaining to the Pacers as they attempt to navigate treacherous waters without their superstar point guard.

Best Bet: None

The Haliburton injury changes everything, putting a damper on the follow-up to what was truly a miraculous push to a potential first-ever championship which fell short by 48 minutes and a torn Achilles. Myles Turner has also left for Wisconsin to suit up alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, which creates a gaping hole at the five spot once filled by the franchise's all-time leader in blocked shots. Jay Huff slots into that role for now with backup Thomas Bryant in Cleveland, but Huff has never averaged more than 14 minutes per game in his career. What's left of the deep roster could remain competitive in an Eastern Conference left in shambles, but the ceiling isn't what it once was. It's a fall from grace to envision a Larry O'Brien trophy in your hands to now simply vying for a spot in the playoffs, but that's the reality Indiana now faces.

The Central Division houses the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, and Bucks, all of whom are projected to finish higher in the standings than the Pacers. Even with Haliburton healthy, Cleveland still had a 14-game lead over its four competitors when it was all said and done, so the idea that Indiana will somehow bridge the gap this time around without arguably its best player is outlandish.

It feels like a season lost well before the ball even goes up on opening night. The Pacers are well coached with Rick Carlisle with a slew of young talent (Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith, Ben Sheppard, and Bennedict Mathurin are all 25 years of age or younger) ready and willing to step up in Haliburton's stead, and perhaps that's enough to exceed the admittedly very slim expectations bestowed upon them. Ultimately, that won't amount to much compared to the dream surge we all just witnessed, and that's a shame.

Best Bet: UNDER 36.5 Wins, -114

The Pacers are an even 11-11 over the last two seasons when Haliburton is inactive, and that's likely the best-case scenario here for a full 82-game slate with the organization already declaring that the two-time All-Star will miss the entirety of the season.

Finishing with at least 47 wins two-straight years only to be projected for nearly a double-digit drop is a punch to the gut, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that Indiana's young underdog core could somehow beat this number. Their saving grace is being in the East, as we wouldn't even be entertaining an OVER if Indiana called the West its home, but as the odds suggest, you should still be taking the UNDER.

Best Bet: Bennedict Mathurin for NBA Most Improved Player, +1400

In an interview with Basketball, She Wrote's Caitlin Cooper, Carlisle spoiled that Bennedict Mathurin is extremely likely to end up moving into the starting lineup at shooting guard with Andrew Nembhard sliding over to the point. The Pacers are undoubtedly going to fall from the third-ranked offense (114.8 points per 100 possessions) it registered this past season, so making Mathurin a full-time starter (came off the bench 23 out of 72 games and all 22 playoff games) makes a ton of sense to try an prevent a noticeable collapse.

He averaged 16.7 points, six rebounds, and 1.9 assists as a starter while ranking third on the team in scoring behind Pascal Siakam and Haliburton. Mathurin's role did diminish in the postseason, however, with his minutes dropping from 29.9 to just 17.5 per contest, and that was less than fellow second-unit teammate Obi Toppin.

Mathurin is more likely to have a breakout year as a scorer with more opportunities to generate offense. The prior two recipients of the award in Tyrese Maxey and Dyson Daniels boosted their scoring output by at least eight points year over year. While such a leap would basically make the 23-year-old a top-10 scorer across the Association, which doesn't seem likely, voters do love players who can fill up the box score. Mathurin's upside as far as that's concerned is greater than that of Nembhard.
