Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

Portland Trail Blazers 2025-26 NBA Season Preview, Betting Odds

The Portland Trail Blazers' reunion with arguably the greatest player in their franchise history this summer by signing Damian Lillard hit many basketball fans in the feels, especially those residing in Rip City. The 35-year-old veteran will be continuing his recovery from a torn Achilles, though, so any impact he'd have on a developing, budding group won't be felt for another year or so.

This 2025-26 preview will analyze all betting odds for the Trail Blazers as they attempt to replicate a fairly productive stretch coming out of the All-Star break and take another positive step forward by proving they can at least hover around the .500 mark, all without the services of Lillard.

Even if Lillard were healthy enough to compete, his presence wouldn't drastically raise the ceiling of what was the youngest team across the Association last season. After averaging 24.6 points in his two years with the Milwaukee Bucks, who knows how he'll even fare once he's cleared coming off what's usually an incredibly debilitating injury, and even more so for those in his age bracket. The future of Portland's backcourt is in the hands of Scoot Henderson (21) and Shaedon Sharpe (22) anyway, and the trade to acquire two-time champion Jrue Holiday from the Boston Celtics was executed to provide the upstarts the veteran guidance they needed prior to Lillard being brought back. It's ever apparent that Henderson and Sharpe aren't prepared yet for such an undertaking, but being led by the hand by an elite offensive and defensive guard (albeit in the latter stages of their respective careers) for the time being could pay off in the near future.

Portland went a respectable 13-14 coming back from All-Star Weekend to finish tied for the 11th-best record in the Western Conference. It resulted in the strongest finish of the Chauncey Billups era as head coach, but the team's leading scorer in Anfernee Simons is now a member of the Boston Celtics in what was essentially a cost-cutting measure. No player averaged better than 20 points per contest, but Simons was the closest at 19.3. The offense in general sputtered at just 111 points per 100 possessions, which ranked in the bottom-third of the league (22nd), and no one on the depth chart screams being someone who can have the rock in their hands when the score is tight and be consistently called upon to hit clutch shots. That role will absolutely fall upon Lillard once he's cleared, barring other moves being made.

The absolute reach that was taking Yang Hansen with the No. 16 overall pick after he was projected to be an early second rounder was undoubtedly the biggest shock of the draft. Thankfully, at least in Summer League, Hansen justified such confidence by averaging 10 points, 5.8 rebounds, four assists, and 2.3 rejections in his four appearances. His high ceiling, paired with the uncertainty surrounding most prospects slotted around that pick, makes it a worthwhile gamble looking back. Portland needs to starting swinging for the fences in that regard when it comes to talent acquisition because there's a core with solid upside already in tow, yet no one with true superstar potential. This season will be a proving ground for the likes of Henderson, Sharpe, Hansen, Deni Avdija, Donovan Clingan, and defensive standout Toumani Camara to see who can emerge from the pack and be the next face of Portland basketball.

Best Bet: UNDER 34.5 wins, -120

This wager makes more sense if you believe that aforementioned 13-14 stretch was a whole lot of something as opposed to nothing at all. The Trail Blazers owned the No. 4-ranked defense allowing just 110.4 points per 100 possessions over their last 27 games, which was 3.3 points per 100 possessions better than their final season average. That should carry over and keep them in the thick of it when shots aren't falling, and maybe even steal a victory or two along the way.

That hot run did only get Portland to 36 wins, though, and 35 is what's needed for an OVER to connect. There's an echo in here when saying the West is a jungle, but the reason why that's stated ad nauseam is because it's true. Getting through the vines and trees unscathed with a better understanding of who can contribute what should be the goal, rather than sneaking into the play-in tournament with no real chance of challenging the top dogs.

Best Bet: Deni Avdija for NBA Most Improved Player, +1400

Avdija's first season in Rip City was far and away the most efficient of his young career, averaging highs in points (16.9), rebounds (7.3), assists (3.9), and steals (1.0). He ended up finishing eighth in voting for Most Improved Player this past season with a single first-place vote as a result, and should be on pace for bigger and better production in 2025-26 with no one standing in his way.

His showing during the EuroBasket tournament for Israel should strengthen one's resolve here, as he joined Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only players to average better than 24 points per game for their nation. Avdija did so by shooting just under 50 percent from the field as Israel went 3-2 in Group D and pushed Antetokounmpo's Greece (bronze medal) to the limit in the Round of 16. Whether or not any of that will actually conjure up some momentum for the 24-year-old wing will be determined soon, but those kinds of numbers would make him a realistic threat to become the fourth Most Improved Player winner for Portland and the first since C.J. McCollum in 2016.
