A 16-game stretch (6-10) to close out last season for the Memphis Grizzlies set off a whirlwind chain of events which resulted in the dismissal of now former head coach Taylor Jenkins, getting swept out of the playoffs as the No. 8 seed, and the trading of a top-10 scorer in franchise history in Desmond Bane. Who knows what the current makeup of the team would be had they avoided such a collapse, but what remains is a genuine curiosity over whether or not the Grizzlies can still be a powerhouse in the Western Conference or if they've taken a step back.
This 2025-26 season preview will attempt to paint the picture that Memphis is worthy of being feared by dissecting all of its important betting odds and which futures potential bettors should be strongly considering.

Best Bet: Memphis Grizzlies to win Southwest Division, +1100
The Bane deal with the Orlando Magic shocked pretty much everyone, as he's only 27 years old, is tied into his current deal through the 2028-29 campaign, and has averaged better than 18 points per game for four-straight years. A treasure's trove of draft picks (four unprotected first rounders and one first-round swap) and a serviceable replacement (if not entirely) in 12-year veteran shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was too enticing to pass up, though, even if those picks aren't expected to fall in the lottery with the upward trajectory Orlando is on. One of those picks was used to move up in this year's order to take Cedric Coward, who averaged 17.7 points in his last collegiate year with the Cougars. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant remain the Grizzlies' meal tickets anyway, and those incoming assets provide the front office some flexibility to either acquire another star to join them or, if the time is right, blow the team up entirely and start anew. As NBA.com's John Schuhmann points out, the combination of Jackson Jr. and Morant actually outscored opponents by 11.2 points per 100 possessions in 372 minutes whenever Bane wasn't on the floor with them anyway.
A few more victories during that aforementioned 6-10 run would have placed Memphis higher in the standings, therefore avoiding the play-in bracket altogether and a matchup with the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder. It may not have been enough to save Jenkins' job, though, as reports emerged over differing opinions surrounding team philosophy which created tension between him and the front office, on top of the fact that the Grizzlies were just 12-25 at the time versus teams with winning records compared to a 36-9 mark against teams below the .500 mark. We'll have to see more from Tuomas lisalo and what he'll be implementing before determining if a sixth-ranked offense and being first in pace once again is sustainable under his guidance, although one would assume that at least some emphasis will be placed on running and gunning while maintaining a strong defensive front on the other end.
The Houston Rockets won the Southwest Division crown in 2024-25 with a four-game lead over Memphis, but the absence of starting point guard Fred VanVleet will hurt them this time around. The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs are also on the come up, so while the Grizzlies only have the fourth-shortest odds to finish atop this group, it's currently the strongest bang for your buck in any divisional future with four teams having a realistic shot at connecting. Morant will need to maintain a clean(er) bill of health after only suiting up for a combined 59 games the past two seasons, though, while now sophomores Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey will need to build off of their All-Rookie First Team honors and round out a starting lineup which outscored opponents by 26.4 points per 100 possessions along with Bane. Memphis is still a quality basketball team which isn't in dire need of detonating, with the hope being that the drop off from parting with Bane won't be too severe.

Best Bet: OVER 40.5 wins, -114
The Grizzlies had a 10-3 record without Bane last season, and everything needed to go off the rails for the team to fail to win at least 50 games. They've won at least 48 games three of the last four years, as well, and the one when they didn't in 2023-24 was because Morant was both suspended 25 games and then needed season-ending shoulder surgery, keeping him to just nine appearances in total.
Again, Memphis isn't going to fall off the face of the planet because Bane isn't around. Now it may do so after the latest injury report was revealed, as Jackson Jr. (toe, 4-to-6 weeks), Edey (ankle, 6-to-9 weeks), and Brandon Clarke (knee, six weeks) are all going to be missing substantial time, so keep that in mind.

Best Bet: Ty Jerome for NBA Sixth Man of the year, +1500
The Grizzlies just finished second overall in bench scoring at 43.9 points per game and have since added a player in Ty Jerome who was third in 2025 Sixth Man of the Year voting with a pair of first-place votes while with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He took what was clearly a career year and converted it into a new $28-million contract while shifting conferences, signing one month after the Bane trade was completed and giving Memphis an offensive-minded guard who was a much better outside shooter (43.9 percent from 3-point range) than his predecessor (39.2 percent). Jerome even became the first Cavaliers player in their history to convert eight triples in a game without missing a single attempt.
In 70 games, Jerome contributed 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while shooting 51.6 percent from the field as Cleveland's primary option off the pine during its 64-18 campaign. Very few players could realistically take this role and come close to offering up similar production to that of Bane, but Jerome bridges that gap and can do so at a much cheaper rate. Possessing 15-to-1 odds as of writing means only four other players now have shorter odds to win the John Havlicek trophy than he does, and voters will have him front of mind after the year he just had blowing up the scene.
