Detroit Pistons 2025-26 NBA Season Preview, Betting Odds

The sixth-greatest turnaround by a team in NBA history has generated actual expectations for the Detroit Pistons, who've evolved from being the laughing stock of the league to a top contender in the Eastern Conference. Pushing the New York Knicks to the near brink in the opening round of the playoffs with the first postseason victories since 2008 is something to be proud of, but now the Pistons want more heading into the upcoming campaign.

This 2025-26 season preview will look at all significant betting odds for Detroit as it looks to build off of its incredible 30-win jump year over year and erase any concerns that its historic run was simply a flash in the pan.

So what exactly changed for the Pistons to more than triple their win total in one fell swoop without some sort of major offseason acquisition? Past teams which had more dramatic transformations like the 2007-08 Boston Celtics (42-win increase) and 2004-05 Phoenix Suns (33-win increase) could at least attribute their turnarounds to superstars such as Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Steve Nash entering the fold, so unless you have names like Tobias Harris, Dennis Schroder, and Tim Hardaway Jr. on a similar pedestal, it couldn't have possibly been that. Then again, adding veterans to young cores has proven to be a fruitful formula in the past, and with one of the team's top scorers in Jaden Ivey suffering a season-ending leg injury on Jan. 1, having those battle-tested vets on board helped provide a sense of calm that Detroit wasn't going to completely collapse following a halfway-decent start (15-18) by its standards. Two of those aforementioned three names in Schroder and Hardaway Jr. are now gone, though, but their replacements in Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson are upgrades in terms of potential on-court impact.

Cade Cunningham finally looked every bit like a No. 1 overall pick, earning a spot on his first-ever All-Star team, the All-NBA Third team, and even generating some votes for Most Valuable Player with a seventh-place finish. He also ranked seventh in scoring (26.9 points) and fourth in assists (9.2) with a usage rate (33.2) which was only behind Giannis Antetokounmpo (34.9) and eventual MVP winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (34.6). While the Pistons were 6-6 in the 12 games he missed, five of those wins came against teams with a bottom-eight record, and the team was also 5.3 points per 100 possessions better offensively whenever he was on the floor. His presence helps paint the picture of how Detroit became the first team since the 2008 Celtics to improve by at least five points per 100 possessions both offensively and defensively from the season prior. Turning the rock over at least five times in all but one of the playoff meetings with New York probably wasn't how Cunningham envisioned his series unfolding, but nonetheless, what the now 24-year-old guard proved from opening night through Game 6 was that he could be the catalyst behind a return to prominence for the Pistons.

As far as these futures are concerned, with the shortest odds coming from the race in the Central Division, the only chance Detroit has of prevailing is a catastrophic decline from a Cleveland Cavaliers powerhouse which just won 64 games. Even emerging from the East to represent the conference in the Finals feels a few years away from being a credible goal, but this isn't to suggest the Pistons are to be taken lightly. Ivey (17.6 points per contest prior to injury) has been cleared for training camp, Jalen Duren has proven to be a double-double machine, and while his twin brother Amen is receiving critical acclaim with the Houston Rockets, Pistons forward Ausar Thompson looks every bit the defensive juggernaut and is no where near being at his fullest potential on that end. Detroit is still probably another piece away from joining the conversation with Cleveland and the New York Knicks for East supremacy, but finishing with home-court advantage in the first round is practical and the logical next step in its progression to the top.

Odds as of October 10, 2025 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Best Bet: OVER 46.5 wins, -104

The last time the Pistons won at least 47 games just so happened to coincide with the last conference finals appearance for the organization in 2008 after achieving a 59-23 record. Everyone in the Motor City would love such a finish, but 47 victories or better would also suffice, and that's completely doable with wiggle room atop the standings now that the Celtics, Indiana Pacers, and Milwaukee Bucks are projected to move down the pecking order.

Their respective declines means Detroit can feasibly continue to garner more and more wins and fight for a top-four spot. The status of Malik Beasley (finished second in total 3-pointers made with 319) could shake things up a smidge if he ultimately doesn't return (currently a free agent, lingering off-court issues), but not my much.

Best Bet: JB Bickerstaff for NBA Coach of the year, +1000

The 2024 Coach of the Year race was won by Cleveland's Kenny Atkinson with 59 first-place votes, but Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff wasn't too far behind with 31 of his own in what was his first year on the job after getting canned by the Cavaliers. He was a feel-good story after his unceremonious dismissal, nearly snatching the Red Auerbach trophy away from his successor in Atkinson while proving that the four-year contract (team option for fifth) he was given was every bit warranted.

You'd think a 30-win improvement would be enough for the hardware, and that's obviously not going to happen again, yet Bickerstaff still finds himself locked for the third-shortest odds as of writing behind fellow East coaches Jamahl Mosley of the Orlando Magic and Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks. Detroit has to finish as good. He's beloved by his players and respected by his peers, and now that the Pistons are on everyone's radar, if they continue on their upward trajectory, voters may feel inclined to recognize Bickerstaff for the early success he's found.
