NHL Playoff Odds: Lightning And Avalanche Lead The Way

NHL playoff odds have been released for every team.

The 2021-22 NHL regular season will be very interesting with the divisions returning to their regular format after a year of uncertainty. The puck drops on October 12 when the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning hold their ring ceremony before taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins. They’ll be followed by the Seattle Kraken making their regular-season debut against the Vegas Golden Knights.

NHL Playoff Odds: Lightning Leading Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division is very top-heavy and this became quite apparent with the opening NHL playoff odds. The Tampa Bay Lightning, coming off back-to-back championships, are heavy favorites to make another appearance in the playoffs at -2500.

The Lightning are followed by an incredibly talented Maple Leafs team that has not had the same success as the Lightning in the playoffs.

However, they look to finally get over the hump and join the elusive second round of the postseason. The Leafs sit at -1100 to make the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six years.

The Lightning and Maple Leafs are joined by the Boston Bruins (-750) and Florida Panthers (-550) as heavy favorites to be the four teams to make it out of the Atlantic.

The oddsmakers aren’t giving much of a chance to the rest of the teams in the division to make the playoffs. The Montreal Canadiens (+185), Detroit Red Wings (+1000), Ottawa Senators (+1200), and Buffalo Sabres (+1400) are all on the outside looking in.

Islanders Out In Front In Metro Division's Playoff Odds

The Metropolitan Division is going to be an absolute war zone through the 2021-22 NHL season. Arguably the best division in hockey, the Metro has six of eight teams with minus odds to make the postseason.

That starts with the New York Islanders (-325), who made the conference finals last season and look to build off of it. The Isles are a hard-nosed, gritty team with great coaching. They may not necessarily win this division, but they are certainly a team that could once again make noise come playoff time.

The Islanders are followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins (-210), Carolina Hurricanes (-200), New York Rangers (-155), Washington Capitals (-155), and Philadelphia Flyers (-125) as favorites to make the postseason.

The teams that oddsmakers are giving less chance of making the postseason are the New Jersey Devils (+200) and Columbus Blue Jackets (+1100).

Value Pick: New Jersey Devils (+200)

The New Jersey Devils are a good value pick at +200. They have a talented young team that looks to be heading in the right direction and could get there as soon as this upcoming season.

Teams like the Capitals and Flyers have some questions surrounding them going into this season. I expect the Devils to take that next step and squeak into the playoffs.

Avalanche Are Heavy Favorites In Central Division's Playoff Odds

The Central Division features several teams that oddsmakers view as borderline playoff teams. Following the heavy favorite Colorado Avalanche (-5000), the odds suggest an intriguing battle among the remaining teams.

Following the Avs are five teams with minus odds to make the NHL playoffs: the Minnesota Wild (-325), Dallas Stars (-240), St. Louis Blues (-190), Winnipeg Jets (-140), and Chicago Blackhawks (-135).

Value Pick: Winnipeg Jets (-140)

Beyond the Avalanche, any of these teams could find themselves in the playoffs next April. A team like the Winnipeg Jets, in the playoffs consistently over the past few years, appear to be a good pick to make it once again at -140. They have one of the best goalies in the NHL in Connor Hellebuyck, along with a very talented roster.

For the rest of the division, the Nashville Predators (+240) and Arizona Coyotes (+1600) are on the outside looking in. I do not expect either of those teams to clinch a playoff berth.

Golden Knights Lead Pacific Teams' Playoff Odds

The Pacific Division hosts one of the best teams in hockey in the Vegas Golden Knights. After another deep playoff run last season, the Golden Knights appear poised to make more postseason noise with hopes of winning their first-ever Stanley Cup.

Beyond the Golden Knights, this division is as tight as it gets in hockey. The Edmonton Oilers (-325), Seattle Kraken (-135), Calgary Flames (-115), Vancouver Canucks (+145), and Los Angeles Kings (+215) will likely be battling it out for those final playoff spots.

The San Jose Sharks (+250) and Anaheim Ducks (+1600) will likely sit at the bottom of the division.

Value Pick: Calgary Flames (-115)

The Flames at -115 seem to be a good bet to make the playoffs, in my opinion. They have a talented roster with several top-six caliber forwards. They are thin on the back end after the loss of longtime captain Mark Giordano. But I expect goaltender Jacob Markstrom to have a bounce-back year and lead the Flames back to the postseason in a weak division.
