IPL Final Four Teams

Gujarat Titans: Odds +150, Implied Probability 40%

Strengths

The fact that they topped the group stages means that on results at least, they’ve been the best side in the competition so far.

Their main strength has been their bowling, something that was obvious before the tournament started and which has proved to be the case as the tournament progressed.

Mohammed Shami often set the ball rolling with early wickets and then it was over to Rashid Khan with spin and Lockie Ferguson with raw pace to keep chipping away.

Another positive has been their ability to win extremely tight games.

By the admission of skipper Hardik Pandya, they won three or four matches from seemingly impossible positions, which shows they’re certainly not found lacking when it comes to handling the high-pressure moments.

Another positive has been Hardik Pandya himself. He has bowled well but batted even better. He’s their top run scorer this season and has really stepped up to the plate.

Weaknesses

Their batting has been overly reliant on Pandya and more recently Wriddhiman Saha.

On the one hand, they do have some strong finishers for the death overs such as David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan. But on the other hand, they’ve been guilty of going a bit too slow in the first 15 overs and at other times of losing too many early wickets.

Key man: Rashid Khan

Verdict

There’s a strange trend whereby the side topping the group stages rarely goes on to win it.

It’s happened just three times since 2011 when the IPL moved to the Qualifier/Eliminator format rather than two straight semifinals, so that’s a stat that goes against the Titans.

But they’re certainly good enough to win it.

Rajasthan Royals: Odds +175, Implied Probability 36.4%

Strengths

It’s not a bad position to be in when you have both the Orange Cap holder (Jos Buttler) and the Purple Cap holder (Yuzvendra Chahal) on your side. Buttler’s runs and Chahal’s wickets have been a major factor in their success so far.

Despite generally only coming in with three or four overs left, the late hitting of Shimron Hetmyer has been a big positive as well, while Ravi Ashwin has been adding some extremely valuable runs himself, in addition to contributing with wickets and a good economy rate with the ball.

Weaknesses

They’ve conceded more runs in the field than you’d expect for a side that has such a good bowling lineup on paper. Part of the reason for that has been some undisciplined bowling but they’ve also been guilty of some poor fielding.

Another concern is that Buttler seems to be out of form at just the wrong time. He’s scored just nine runs in his last three matches after scoring three centuries early in the tournament.

Key man: Jos Buttler

Verdict

Finishing as the runner-up gives you a better chance of winning the IPL than topping the group stages so that will play into the Royals’ hands. That’s happened seven times in the last 11 years.

They won two tight matches to end as runners-up so they will be going into the Qualifier 1 with their confidence high. They’re arguably a better value than Gujarat.

Lucknow Super Giants: Odds +500, Implied Probability 16.7%

Strengths

Any side that can open the batting with KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock is always going to be strong and they were at their best last time out in a record-breaking partnership against KKR that made plenty of IPL news.

But they also have good variety in their bowling with a good leg spinner (Ravi Bishnoi), a tall pace bowler who can generate extra bounce (Jason Holder) and two wicket-taking bowlers in Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan who can mix it up.

KL Rahul is an experienced and proactive captain.

Weaknesses

They’ve been guilty of a couple of really bad batting collapses when Rahul and de Kock have got out at just the wrong time.

Sometimes the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Evin Lewis and Jason Holder haven’t been able to build on good starts or recover when the two openers have failed. And they don’t bat as deep as some of the other sides in the playoffs.

Key man: KL Rahul

Verdict

They’ve been far more consistent all season than RCB and should really beat them in the Eliminator. But they don’t look quite up to winning three matches in a row to win in their debut season.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Odds +500, Implied Probability 16.7%

Strengths

As per usual, RCB’s success has come not from playing well as a team but rather from a few extremely strong individual performances.

Wanindu Hasaranga has taken a load of wickets and is behind only Chahal in the race for the Purple Cap.

Josh Hazlewood has been his usual consistent self, taking wickets at the top and in the death overs and rarely going for many runs.

Dinesh Karthik has been good, too. Batting at six or seven, he has a sky-high strike rate and has won games for them from tough positions with some really clean hitting.

Faf du Plessis hasn’t always had it all his own way with the bat but he’s a better skipper than former RCB captain Virat Kohli.

Weaknesses

Bar a good knock last time, Kohli has been a major disappointment with the bat. He’s either got out early for few runs or, worse still, been around for six or seven overs and eaten up too many deliveries by not scoring quickly enough.

Du Plessis has also been short of runs and they don’t know who to bat at No. 3 so they have plenty of problems with their top order. They may need another rescue act from the likes of Karthik, Shabhaz Ahmed or Hasaranga.

Key man: Wanindu Hasaranga

Verdict

There’s just too much wrong with this side to think they can go on and win three matches in a row against the best sides in the competition. They’ve been inconsistent all season and it would be something of a surprise if they won the Eliminator, let alone the two matches after that.

Eight Teams Become 10 Ahead Of IPL 2022

The same eight teams as ever returned for another go at winning the IPL: Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

But they’ve been joined by two new teams as the IPL opted to expand after years of just having eight. The Lucknow Super Giants are operating out of the city of Lucknow and playing at the 50,000 capacity BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium.

They bought former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul before the auction, alongside Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and young Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Other star names on the squad include Quinton de Kock, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Avesh Khan and Jason Holder.

Completing the 10 are the Gujarat Titans, who have the honor of playing their games at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest in the world with a capacity of 132,000 in the city of Ahmedabad. They brought in Hardik Pandya as captain, also snapping up Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill before the mega auction took place.

Other eye-catching purchases included Mohammad Shami, Matthew Wade, Lockie Ferguson and Rahul Tewatia. Jason Roy was bought in the auction but has since opted out to spend time with his family.

What Is The New IPL Format?

Another thing to be aware of is the new format.

The 10 teams are split into two groups, with seedings determined by how many times the teams have won or made the IPL final in the past.

Here are the new groups:

Group A
  • Mumbai Indians
  • Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Delhi Capitals
  • Lucknow Super Giants
Group B
  • Chennai Super Kings
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Punjab Kings
  • Gujarat Titans

Each team will play every side in their group twice (home and away), one of the teams in the other group twice (the team that corresponds with them in terms of seedings) and all the other teams in the other group once.

So that’s a total of 14 matches in the group stages for each side with games split between four venues: three stadiums in Mumbai and the MCA International Stadium in Pune.

But if you can’t fit in all of that due to time constraints, worry not. We’ll provide you with all the information you need, as well as some top IPL betting tips before and during the whole competition.

In the meanwhile, check our dedicated section on how to bet on the IPL.

Why Bet On IPL 2022?

The IPL is a wonderful annual T20 tournament that boasts all of the game’s star names in a two-month extravaganza complete with over-the-top commentary, big excitable crowds, huge sponsors and even some cheerleaders thrown in.

But aside from all that, it’s serious business when it comes to IPL betting. The nice thing for the savvy IPL bettor is that we have 13 years of IPL data and historical results to study before deciding what to bet on next.

This data can give us serious clues about which type of batsman may come good at a particular ground or what a par score might be on another. Given the popularity of the IPL, there’s no shortage of team news, injury updates and other gossip to also take on board before putting your money down.

Other advantages of betting on IPL 2022 are the massive availability of different betting markets: from man of the match to top batsman, to who will hit the most sixes, who will be the top bowler in the game, to more long-term markets like who will be the top batsman for the whole IPL or which two teams might contest the final. The greater availability of markets, the greater the choice when it comes to what you want to bet on.
