Yankees hopes are in the hands of a prospect

The Yankees give the ball to 23-year-old Chance Adams (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who is making his MLB debut. The Arizona native is getting his crack at the majors after J.A. Happ was placed on the disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease earlier in the week. The rookie was drafted in the fifth round by the Yankees in the 2015 draft and is the 13th ranked prospect in their organization. He has good life on his fastball, touching the mid-90s and he combines that with a sharp-breaking slider.

Adams has made 21 starts for the Yankees' AAA club, the Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The club went 11-10 SU over those 21 outings, including a 5-4 SU record in his road starts. The 23-year-old is much better at home than he is he on the road, posting a 5.26 road ERA vs a 3.99 home ERA. He definitely has good stuff, though, as he averages 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Adams has gotten better as the weather has warmed up as he sported a 5.93 ERA through April and May, but in June he had a 3.34 ERA and lowered it slightly again in July to 3.33 and didn’t allow a single home run all of last month.

Eovaldi looks to string together back-to-back strong starts for the Red Sox

Opposing the young rookie, Boston sends Nathan Eovaldi (4-4, 3.80 ERA) to the hill. The Texas native couldn’t have asked for a better start with his new team after being traded from the Tampa Bay Rays in late July. He tossed seven scoreless innings in his debut allowing just four hits while striking out five against the Minnesota Twins. The 28-year-old has been great in his home starts this season, holding a sparkling 1.50 ERA and keeping batters to a .179 average over his four home outings. Conversely, Eovaldi has struggled on the road with a 5.18 ERA and batters having a .242 average through his seven away starts.

The Red Sox hurler got a look at the Yankees lineup on June 15 at Yankee Stadium. He tossed 7.1 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits in a 5-0 loss in his only career start vs the Pinstripes. According to our Pitcher Money Lost table, Eovaldi hasn’t been good news for bettors this season, costing them $-248 based on $100 bets on each of his starts.

Both Teams Trending toward the UNDER

With the Yankees rolling out a pitcher making his MLB debut, Sportsbook has today’s total Sportsbook at 10 runs. From his days with the Rays and into his debut with the Red Sox, Nathan Eovaldi’s clubs have gone UNDER in seven of his last 10 starts with an average combined score of 7.4. Meanwhile, the Yankees have gone UNDER in four of their last six games with an average combined score of 9.33. Additionally, the Red Sox have gone UNDER in eight of their last 10 home games with an average combined score of 7.6. Tonight’s total opened at 10 runs and over the last 30 meetings between the Yankees and Red Sox, only nine games have gone OVER that total.
