  • The New York Yankees (30-22) will try to get back into the win column when they welcome the San Diego Padres (23-27) to Yankee Stadium for the first contest of a three-game set on Friday night. New York is coming off back-to-back losses to the Baltimore Orioles while San Diego is 3-1 in its last four outings.

    The Padres opened as the road favorite at -141 on the moneyline with the Yankees getting +115 at home. The total was set at 9 runs with the UNDER going 3-1-1 in the last five meetings between the two teams, while New York is 8-1 in its last nine games versus San Diego.

    Starting Pitcher Report: Padres 

    Joe Musgrove (1-2) will make his sixth start of the year for the Padres, coming off a couple consecutive rough outings. The right-hander gave up six hits and four earned runs to Boston Red Sox the over just five innings in his last appearance on May 20 after allowing eight hits and four runs in the start prior.

    Musgrove owns a 6.75 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP through 24 innings this season. Tonight’s outing will be his first-ever start against the Yankees.

    Starting Pitcher Report: Yankees

    Randy Vasquez (0-0) will make his MLB debut for the Yankees tonight after signing with the club back in 2018 as a 19-year-old. The right-hander has had a mediocre start to his season in Triple-A with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRides, posting a 4.85 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP through 42.2 innings.

    Vasquez has been much better over his last four starts, though, as his ERA is down to 2.14 over that span.

    The Keys to Victory: Padres

    The Padres have not been a great offensive club this season, ranking 25th in the majors with 3.92 runs per game, but they’ll have a good opportunity to get the bats going against a rookie starter in Vasquez.

    San Diego could be down two key bats in Manny Machado (out, hand) and Ha-Seong Kim (questionable, knee) but both Juan Soto (4 HR, 11 RBI) and Fernando Tatis Jr. (5 HR, 9 RBI) have been productive this month. If the Padres are going to take the series opener, they’ll need Soto and Tatis Jr. to drive in a few runs.

    The Keys to Victory: Yankees

    The Yankees are coming off back-to-back losses but had been hot, going 12-3 in the 15 games prior while scoring 143 runs in the last month – fifth most in the majors. It’s probably safe to assume that Vasquez will give up at least a few runs in his first start, so the bats will have to provide plenty of run support to get him the win.

    The top of the order has been absolutely scorching in May, with Aaron Judge (19 RBI), Harrison Bader (17 RBI), Anthony Rizzo (17 RBI) and Gleber Torres (15 RBI) combining for 56 percent of the club’s run production in May. That quartet will likely have to get the job done tonight for New York to snap its skid.
