Yankees MLB Preview

Will The 2022 New York Yankees Break The Season Wins Record?

The 2001 Seattle Mariners were an absolute wagon. With a rookie Ichiro winning MVP, John Olerud and Edgar Martinez mashing baseballs, and eight total MLB all-stars at the Midsummer Classic, they were hard to beat.

Those ’01 Mariners won 116 games, tying the 1906 Cubs for the most victories ever in a season. But early this year, that record looks like it could be in jeopardy. The New York Yankees are 50-18 with a .735 win rate and a 119-win pace.

Can the Yankees keep it up and will New York set the record for the most wins in a season? Odds at Sportsbook seem to think it’s a long shot. Below we break down the Yankees’ 2022 total win odds but if you’re looking for more MLB betting resources, check out Odds Shark’s MLB Betting Hub as well as our MLB computer picks page.

Can The Yankees Break The Wins Record?

With a hot start, the Yankees have taken their place near the top of World Series odds and seem primed to win the AL East and enter the postseason with a bye. At this point, the real question is if they’re going to make history.

The Yankees started their season 50-17, becoming just the fifth MLB team since 1930 to win 50 of their first 67 games. Three of those teams went on to win the World Series, and the last team to start 50-17 was the 2001 Mariners who won 116 games.

Right now, the Yankees are on pace to win just over 119 games, but the biggest things that could prevent them from approaching 116 wins this year are schedule difficulty and injury. They have been remarkably healthy, with no injuries in the rotation and the oft-hurt Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge both staying on the field this year.

So far, the Yankees have had the 10th-easiest schedule in the majors and the fourth-easiest in the AL. They do, however, have the seventh-hardest remaining schedule in baseball. The Yankees haven’t really struggled with any teams in 2022, but a tough slate in the back half of the season could cost them those few wins they’ll need to push 116.

Yankees’ Pitching Leads The Way

While the Bronx Bombers got their nickname from hitting homers, it’s been the other side of the game that’s carrying them toward history in 2022. Looking at our New York Yankees MLB Team Report, it’s clear the Yankees’ biggest strength comes in run prevention. While the Yankees outperform the league in most offensive statistics, they’re also allowing just 3.0 runs per game. The Yankees’ pitching is 1.34 runs per game below average and the best in baseball by over 0.2 runs.

The Yankees have allowed 10 fewer runs than any other team this season and 26 fewer than any other AL squad as of June 22. With a top-three bullpen in baseball and five starters with ERAs below 3.30, scoring any amount of runs against New York right now is difficult.

Data as of June 22 from Odds Shark’s database

The Yankees have been one of the most profitable betting teams in baseball this year, with a variety of different ways to make money on the Bronx Bombers. The easiest way has been a straight-up or moneyline bet, with the Yankees dominating early this year and earning bettors +$1,281.02 in profits.

The Yankees are also raking in cash on the runline, which shows they’re blowing out opponents regularly, too. New York isn’t just scraping by with one-run victories (though their bullpen allows them to win those, too), with 26 of their 50 wins coming by three or more runs.

How To Bet On Yankees Record Chase

While you can bet on individual Yankees games, a great way to bet on New Yorks potential wins record chase is in the form of a futures bet. With the odds outlined above from Sportsbook, you can wager on how many wins the Yankees will have this year in the form of an OVER/UNDER win total futures bet. For the Yankees to win 117 or more games, the odds will look something like this:

  • OVER 116.5 +950
  • UNDER 116.5 -3300

In this example, the UNDER 116.5 Yankees wins this season is the clear favorite. If they win over 116.5 games, though, you would win $1,050 on a $100 bet—your original wager back, plus $950 in winnings. Check out our odds calculator to see how much you’d win based on the odds and amount wagered, as well as the implied probability of all odds.
