What Team Will Kevin Durant Play for in the 2019-20 NBA season?

Odds Kevin Durant Leaving Golden State Warriors November 16

Drama and infighting among teammates are common occurrences for sports dynasties and the Golden State Warriors are no different. The dust may have settled on the feud between Kevin Durant and Draymond Green that spilled onto the court and into the public domain but with Durant’s ability to opt out of his contract with the Warriors after the playoffs, there is a good chance this will be his last season playing basketball in the Bay.

Oddsmakers still have the Los Angeles Lakers tabbed as +175 favorites to sign Durant for the 2019-20 NBA season with the Warriors next on the list at +200 to keep him, followed by the field at +300, the Knicks at +300 and a return to the Thunder at +700 for the top five options on the list.

Why Would Kevin Durant Leave the Warriors?

It’s a fair question because, historically, no player leaves a legit championship contender and if the Warriors win the NBA title again this season as expected, there would need to be something happening behind the scenes that most analysts and fans are not privy to.

The reason on the surface for why Durant would leave is because of his relationship with forward/center Draymond Green as they have had verbal spats on the court about decision-making and shot selection dating back to the 2016-17 season. But players argue all the time so that doesn’t seem like a legitimate reason and the Warriors have four future Hall of Famers on their current roster who could win titles for years to come.

The suspected reason for why he may depart is to seek another challenge because if the Warriors win the championship again, they would be the first team to win three in a row since the 2000-02 Lakers and only the fourth team in NBA history to accomplish that feat. Elite players of Durant’s ilk are playing for legacy more than money and the public tarnish on the Warriors’ title runs since he arrived in Golden State may motivate him to carve his own path in a new market of his choosing.

Where Will Kevin Durant Go?

Durant’s future with the Warriors has always been a topic of discussion since arriving at Golden State but rumors are heating up about him potentially going to play with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers will have cap space to sign at least one max-salary free agent in the offseason and pairing Durant with LeBron could launch them into the conversation as one of the deadliest one-two punches in NBA history.

There are some in NBA circles who are dubious of Durant signing with the Lakers since he already is playing on the best team in Golden State (+200) and switching to Los Angeles wouldn’t put him in a better position to win another championship. But L.A. is a great city in which to live and prosper in other avenues besides basketball and he owns property in Malibu. At +175, the odds aren’t great but after landing LeBron during the offseason when he was coming off eight straight NBA Finals, the Lakers seem to have regained the luster as a sought-after destination for players.

Another franchise that has been mentioned to be a great option for Durant is the New York Knicks at +300. The Knicks will have cap space to sign two max free agents in the offseason and have a nice young core that could be complementary to Durant’s skill set. Kristaps Porzingis should be recovered from his knee injury and there have also been rumors of Kyrie Irving wanting to return to his roots in the Tri-State area.

What do you think? Is Durant going to be back with the Warriors, or will he take his talents elsewhere? Have your say in the comments.
