  • Two winless teams surprisingly still searching for their first victory will square off in Minnesota on Sunday when the Vikings (0-2 straight up, 0-1-1 against the spread) host the Los Angeles Chargers (0-2, 0-2) in a Pick’em matchup. The Vikings have the advantage of getting some extra rest heading into this one after falling 34-28 to the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles as six-point road underdogs last Thursday.

    The Chargers dropped a 27-24 overtime decision to the Tennessee Titans last Sunday, closing as 2.5-point road favorites despite playing without leading scorer Austin Ekeler.

    Latest Betting Notes: Chargers

    Nobody has scored more touchdowns than Ekeler the previous two years, as the seventh-year running back totaled an NFL-best 38 during that stretch and added one this season before suffering an ankle injury in the team’s 36-34 home loss to the Miami Dolphins in the season opener.

    Ekeler is playing without a contract past this year and has been vocal about his value to Los Angeles, and he was sorely missed this past week with replacement Joshua Kelley rushing for only 39 yards on 13 carries at Tennessee. Ekeler’s status will certainly be worth watching as the Chargers look to break a four-game skid.

    Latest Betting Notes: Vikings

    Minnesota has not looked anything like the defending NFC North champion this year, although the team did pile up some nice garbage stats in finding a way to earn a push at Philadelphia last week.

    Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 364 yards and dour touchdowns against the Eagles, with 159 of that going to All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who has 150 or more now in the first two games.

    The problem for the Vikings has been the lack of a rushing attack without departed running back Dalvin Cook, who was released in the offseason before landing with the New York Jets. Cook’s replacement Alexander Mattison has been underwhelming so far with 62 rushing yards on 19 carries.

    The Keys to Victory: Chargers

    Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert has done a solid job spreading the ball out to his receivers, but wide receiver Keenan Allen caught both touchdown passes from him last week.

    New offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is still getting used to calling plays for Herbert and the Chargers, and he has to take some responsibility for their two losses when they led both in the fourth quarter. Having Ekeler back would definitely be nice too.

    The Keys to Victory: Vikings

    Turnovers have plagued Minnesota early on this season, with six of the team’s seven coming on fumbles. The Vikings must do a better job of protecting the football if they are going to end a three-game home ATS losing streak and earn their first victory here.

    It would also help if Mattison could provide some sort of running threat to help keep Cousins from having to do it all for Minnesota offensively. Running the ball better is a high priority.
