  • The New York Jets (1-1 straight up, 1-1 against the spread) will play their second divisional matchup in as many home games on Sunday when they host the winless New England Patriots (0-2, 0-2) as small underdogs again. The Jets were abysmal offensively last week in a 30-10 road loss to the Dallas Cowboys as 8.5-point underdogs, prompting oddsmakers to set them as dogs for the third consecutive game to open the season.

    The Patriots did not look much better in a 24-17 home loss to the Miami Dolphins, suffering their second straight setback at home before hitting the road for the first time.

    New England’s offense remains a work in progress with former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien back calling the plays. The Patriots heard boos from their fans throughout their game against the Dolphins, trailing 17-3 into the fourth quarter before scoring a couple late touchdowns in the final 11:21.

    Quarterback Mac Jones completed 31-of-42 passes for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception while running back Rhamondre Stevenson found paydirt for the first time this year with 5:25 remaining after Miami led 24-10. New England’s defense has also left a lot to be desired, although the team played two of the NFL’s top offenses in the first two weeks, something that will not be the case here. 

    Latest Betting Notes: Jets

    New York should be in panic mode following the loss at Dallas, as quarterback Zach Wilson does not appear to be the answer under center as the team attempts to recover from the season-ending Achilles injury for Aaron Rodgers. Wilson threw three interceptions versus arguably the league’s best defense, completing 12-of-27 passes while getting sacked three times for 19 yards as well.

    The good news is that the Patriots will likely not be able to pressure Wilson the same way the Cowboys did because they do not have the same level of talent. The bad news is that this is the same team that frustrated him a year ago to the point that he deflected blame and then got benched.

    The Keys to Victory: Patriots

    New England has won the past 14 meetings with New York, going 10-4 ATS in those games. That is another reason the Patriots enter this rivalry matchup as road favorites. Head coach Bill Belichick has owned the Jets lately, and his defensive background has served his team very well in terms of figuring out ways to make Wilson look bad.

    This will be a cake walk for him and his staff in terms of preparation when compared to game planning for Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa the first two weeks.

    The Keys to Victory: Jets

    At some point, Wilson must find a way to play like a legitimate NFL quarterback who was drafted second overall just two years ago, right? While New York has reportedly not been looking for his replacement to salvage this season in the wake of the Rodgers injury, time is ticking on his progression or lack thereof.

    Wilson and new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett are under the gun to produce points in this spot and help the defense. If not, the Jets will have no other choice than to start searching for a new signal caller.
