Hurricanes, Islanders Begin Unlikely Second-Round Matchup at Barclays Center

Instead of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin doing battle in the second round of the NHL playoffs, the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes will face off after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. With Game 1 set for Friday in New York, sportsbooks opened the Islanders as -145 home favorites with a total of 5.5.

Hurricanes vs Islanders Game Center

Standout Stats

  • The Islanders are well-rested after sweeping Pittsburgh and haven’t seen the ice since April 16. Carolina is on the opposite end of the spectrum after pushing the Capitals to seven games before picking up a huge win in double overtime.
  • The last time these teams met was on January 8, when the Hurricanes posted a 4-3 victory to prevent a four-game sweep in the regular-season series.
  • Hurricanes goaltender Petr Mrazek won 11 of the final 13 games in the regular season before notching a 2.54 goals-against average vs Washington.
  • Islanders starting netminder Robin Lehner had a playoff-best 1.47 goals-against average and .956 save percentage in the first-round series, although backup Thomas Greiss started all four regular-season matchups with the Hurricanes.
  • This is New York’s first game at Barclays Center since beating the Edmonton Oilers on February 16. The Islanders played the home stretch of the regular season and the first round of the postseason on Long Island.
  • When the Hurricanes hit the road, high-scoring affairs tend to follow. In Carolina’s past five road games, the OVER is 5-0 with an average combined score of 6.6 goals.
  • Carolina has fared well when facing the Islanders in the Empire State of late. In the Hurricanes’ previous 14 road tilts against the Isles, they’re 10-4 SU.

My best bet for Hurricanes-Islanders

UNDER 5.5 goals

While the Hurricanes’ OVER trend when playing away from home is appealing, I’m on the UNDER in this game. New York was the top UNDER team in the NHL during the regular season and used its smothering defense and rock-solid goaltending to completely dominate the Penguins, and I think they’ll keep that trend going against Carolina.

The total has gone OVER in the Hurricanes’ last five games on the road (avg. combined score: 6.6).away The Hurricanes are 2-7 SU and ATS in their last nine games vs their division on the road.away The Islanders are 5-0 SU in their last five games vs divisional opponents (avg. winning margin: 2.2)home
