Oilers Look for Bounce-Back Win Over Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Oilers in the second of a three-game series in Edmonton on Monday night. The Leafs shut out the Oilers 4-0 on Saturday night and are 4-1-1 against the Oilers this season.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The game opened with the Maple Leafs as favorites at -120 and the line has moved to EVEN odds at most sportsbooks. The total opened up at 6.5 and has stayed at that number with EVEN odds for the OVER and UNDER at most books.

Toronto News & Notes

The Toronto Maple Leafs have won five of their last six games and sit atop the North Division, but their win over the Oilers on Saturday was not as smooth as it may have looked.

While the Leafs had three even-strength goals and the Oilers had none, Edmonton out-chanced the Leafs 23-20 at even strength and had 14 high-danger chances to just six for Toronto.

The Maple Leafs are pretty beaten up right now with Wayne Simmonds, Auston Matthews, Alexander Barabanov and goalie Frederik Andersen all dealing with various injuries. Matthews and Andersen are both questionable for Monday’s game.

Without Andersen between the pipes, backup Jack Campbell made his first start since January 24 on Saturday, making 30 saves for the shutout. Campbell is 3-0-0 this season with a .950 save percentage. He will likely get the start again if Andersen is unable to suit up.

Edmonton News & Notes

It was an uncharacteristic offensive letdown for the Oilers on Saturday night against the Leafs. They were shut out for the first time this season, marking just the second time in the last 17 games they have scored fewer than three goals.

The Oilers lead the league in even-strength goals and rank in the top six in both overall scoring chances and high-danger scoring chances at even strength, so we should be expecting a pretty big bounce-back offensively.

If anyone is going to be responsible for that bounce-back, it is bound to be Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The pair rank first and second in league scoring with 40 and 34 points respectively.

However, the total has gone UNDER in eight of the Oilers’ last 12 games as they seem to be tightening up defensively while their scoring dries up just a little bit.

Betting Pick: OVER 6.5

We liked the OVER in Saturday’s game and the Oilers did not hold up their end of the bargain. But these two teams are too talented offensively for us not to get a true shootout game at some point. We think McDavid and company bounce back while the Leafs stay hot.
