Club América vs León Betting Odds Preview Liga MX soccer Mexico

Club América will look to make it two in a row against León

After shocking Cruz Azul in its last game, Club León travels to Mexico City on Saturday to take on defending champion Club América.

It’s been an up-and-down season for Club León, but they are currently in the top half of the table and feeling very good about themselves. Ignacio Ambriz’s men were able to clinch a valuable 2-0 victory over La Máquina in what was arguably one of their better performances in the season.

However, things don’t get any easier for La Fiera, as they are set to take on the current Liga MX champs América. Following their first defeat in more than five months, Las Águilas were able to get a convincing 2-0 win over Querétaro and arrive to this match in high spirits and looking to stay unbeaten at the Estadio Azteca.

SHARK BITES
  • Club León is unbeaten in its last six Liga MX matches away from home.
  • Club América has won four of its last five Liga MX matches.
  • Club León has just one win in its last six trips to Club América.

América remains competitive at the Estadio Azteca

Playing for the winningest team in Mexican football history comes with plenty of pressure, and any time you lose a game, it is bound to make all the headlines. That’s exactly what happened when Las Águilas lost two weeks ago to Monterrey.

To be fair, Monterrey is no slouch, and despite all the weird things that happened in that game, los Rayados were deserved winners. That’s why I think everybody was expecting a bounce-back victory against Querétaro and that’s exactly what happened. Sure, it wasn’t the most obvious victory for Club América, but they got the job done to earn their second home win of the season.

Now Las Águilas have the advantage of playing two consecutive home games in a stadium where they have looked near impossible to beat. Their unbeaten streak at the Estadio Azteca is still holding strong and in total they have gone 18 straight games without a defeat at home.

León has had the upper hand recently

Club América and León have plenty of history between them. In fact, both of these teams were recently involved in a Liga MX final that saw La Fiera conquer the tournament trophy at the Estadio Azteca.

Coincidentally, prior to losing to Monterrey two weeks ago, Club América’s last league defeat was actually against León. That game ended as a 2-0 victory in favor of La Fiera, who have actually done quite well against Las Águilas in recent seasons. They have just one defeat in their last five matches, including three wins.

Their record at the Estadio Azteca, however, isn’t the best. León has just one win in its last six visits to Club América’s home ground.

The UNDER looks likely

As for other noteworthy patterns in head-to-head matches between these two teams, one of the things that has characterized the last few meetings has been a low number of goals scored. Four of the last five games between León and América have finished in the UNDER.

From a betting standpoint, there is also a very increased likelihood that the match stays close. The last time one of these teams beat the other by more than two goals was all the way back in the 2015 Liga MX Apertura, a total of seven games back. That was also the last time one of the teams scored more than two goals in the matchup.

My take on the game...

I like Club León’s chances here, but I don’t think they have enough momentum just yet to grab an important result in a stadium like the Estadio Azteca. As such, I’m expecting a narrow win for Las Águilas. Although I’m expecting the defending champions to fade at some point this season, this doesn’t seem like the kind of game that they lose.
