Nakamura, Asuka Royal Rumble Faves Hours Before

With mere hours before the WWE Royal Rumble takes place in Philadelphia, Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka are favored to win the men’s and women’s rumble matches respectively.

Nakamura has been the favorite for the bulk of the time leading up to the rumble, as The King of Strong Style is seemingly on the verge of superstardom in the WWE. On the other hand, Asuka found herself listed behind Ronda Rousey in the weeks leading up to the PPV. However, after Rousey denied being in the rumble to TMZ Sports, Asuka slips past the former UFC star.

Though unsubstantiated, there have been plenty of rumors surfacing that Dolph Ziggler is a serious contender to win the men’s rumble. We have not seen Ziggler since he told the fans that they don’t deserve him and vacated the U.S. championship. Winning the rumble would seemingly be a big payoff or continuation of that angle, finally allowing The Show-Off to get his legit main event run.

For the first time in history, the WWE will hold two Royal Rumble matches – one for the men and one for the women – when the squared circle gets set up in Philadelphia on January 28.  Of course, that means that there are twice as many odds for fans and bettors to mull over before the Road to WrestleMania begins.

First, we start with the men’s rumble. Shinsuke Nakamura is currently a +100 favorite to be the last man standing. The victory in the over-the-top-rope battle royal would do wonders for Nakamura, as the former NXT champion has yet to really break out since being called up to the main roster. A victory would also set up what would undoubtedly be the highlight of WrestleMania against AJ Styles.

Nakamura and Styles have already had a phenomenal match in New Japan Pro Wrestle at Wrestle Kingdom 10 – but bringing that chemistry and talent to a larger stage is too good to pass up.

Of course, with the brand split, Nakamura does not need to win the rumble for this match to happen. If we look at the favorite from Raw, we see that Roman Reigns is the top dog to win for the second time in four years. With Reigns dropping the Intercontinental championship on Raw 25, he is freed up to begin a program chasing the Universal title and set up a ’Mania match vs Brock Lesnar.

The most interesting wrestler listed for the male rumble is Daniel Bryan. WWE doctors told the current Smackdown general manager on multiple occasions that he would not be cleared to wrestle. However, Bryan has also openly spoken about the fact that he is going to wrestle again – whether that be with the WWE or elsewhere. And Bryan has seen his odds getting better and better as the rumble approaches.

Now, to the first-ever women’s royal rumble match. First, you should expect plenty of NXT call-ups and surprise entrants with the main roster housing less than 20 full-time wrestlers.

Which brings us to the favorite, Ronda Rousey.

Buzz has been surrounding Rousey and the WWE for some time – really since she made an in-ring appearance at WrestleMania 31. However, Rousey has reportedly begun training at the WWE Performance Center and one of her best friends, Shayna Baszler, was just signed to NXT. It is not an “if” but rather a “when” with Rousey and the WWE.

If the WWE believes that giving the first-ever rumble victory to a full-time wrestler is a better idea – especially after the botched handling of the first women’s money in the bank match – then Asuka is the unquestioned favorite. “The Empress of Tomorrow” is the best female wrestler in the WWE right now (I’m not counting Candice LeRae despite my own personal predilections) and should continue her reign of dominance over the division. Asuka has yet to be pinned in her WWE career and that should remain for a long time. You can easily not count a rumble loss against her undefeated streak but it is better to prove she is the monster everyone should fear.
