Greinke Looks to Get Back in the Win Column vs Last Place Padres

The Arizona Diamondbacks, clinging to a half-game lead in the NL West entering Sunday, opened as big-time favorites against the cellar-dwelling Padres. Arizona holds a 9-4 edge in the season series and had won six straight in San Diego before last night’s loss.

Rookie vs Veteran Mound Matchup

15-year veteran Zach Greinke looks to get back his winning form from July when he takes the mound for the series finale in San Diego. The right-hander has been the losing pitcher in his last three starts, but it’s more of a function of low run support than anything he’s done wrong.

Since the all-star break, Greinke is 2-3 in five starts but he has a 2.36 ERA and opponents are hitting just .175 against him. In two starts vs the Padres in 2018, he is 1-0 and has allowed three earned runs over 12 innings.

Rookie Brett Kennedy will make his third major league start this afternoon in San Diego. Kennedy (0-2, 11.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP) has been roughed up through his first two starts, surrendering 11 earned runs on four home runs and 20 hits through nine innings. Ok, roughed up may have been putting it nicely. Ouch.

D-Backs hitting well in August

As a team, Arizona has a .270 batting average through 15 games this month. That’s good for second-best in the National League. As usual, Paul Goldschmidt leads the charge at the plate, slashing .400/.486/.733 with five home runs and 12 RBIs.

Right there alongside is David Peralta who has an August OPS of 1.219 on the strength of six home runs, three doubles, and a triple. Shortstop Eduardo Escobar is having a wonderful August as well, hitting .315/.381/.574.

Total Opened at 8.0

Seven of Zach Greinke’s last nine starts have hit the UNDER with an average combined score of 6.55 but will totals bettors be able to fade the OVER with Kennedy on the mound?

The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings between these teams at PETCO Park with an average combined score of 11.71. In addition, the OVER has hit in eight of Arizona’s last 12 road games and in five of San Diego’s last seven home games.
