The Philadelphia Phillies (3-1) welcome the Atlanta Braves (1-1) to Citizens Bank Park on Friday for Game 3 of the NLDS with the series all tied up at one game apiece. Find out which team will take the series lead in our Braves vs Phillies prediction.
The Phillies opened as the home favorite at -128 on the moneyline with the Braves coming in at +105. The total was set at 7 runs with the OVER going 4-1 in the last five meetings between the two clubs. Atlanta is 9-4 in its last 13 games so you may want to go with the underdog in your Braves vs Phillies prediction.
Starting Pitchers
Aaron Nola gets the call for Philadelphia in Game 3, coming off an excellent start in his last appearance in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card series against the St. Louis Cardinals on October 8. The right-hander held St. Louis off the scoreboard for 6.2 innings while allowing just four hits in the series-clinching win.
As of Thursday night, no starter had been announced for Atlanta though the decision is likely down to two options: Spencer Strider or Charlie Morton. Strider hasn’t pitched in a game since suffering an oblique strain in mid-September, but Morton struggled this season with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.
After dropping the series opener, the Braves evened the score in Game 2 with a clean 3-0 victory. Kyle Wright was sensational, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Meanwhile Matt Olson, Austin Riley and Travis d’Arnaud all hit consecutive RBI singles in the sixth to round out the game’s scoring.
Olson and d’Arnaud have essentially carried the Braves’ offense so far in the series, recording four RBIs each and eight of the club’s nine RBIs in total. Ronald Acuna Jr. has also been effective with a team-leading four hits and a .571 batting average through the first two contests.
Philadelphia’s Offense Falls Flat In Game 2
After scoring seven runs in the series opener, the Phillies offense fell flat in Game 2, getting shut out while generating just three hits. Zack Wheeler was so-so on the mound, allowing four hits and three earned runs over six innings.
Philadelphia has had fairly even offensive contributions throughout the lineup so far this postseason with Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos and Jean Segura each collecting three RBIs so far. Bryce Harper has a team-high six hits, including the only home run by a Phillies player in these playoffs.
Braves Player Prop: Acuna Jr. OVER 1.5 Hits (+140)
Acuna Jr. has clearly been seeing the ball well with four hits already in the series. You can get him at +140 to hit the OVER on 1.5 hits for Game 3.
Phillies Player Prop: Nola UNDER 1.5 Earned Runs (+125)
Nola has been dominant over the last month and a half, allowing one earned run or fewer in five of his last seven starts. The Phillies starter is getting +125 to finish UNDER 1.5 earned runs on Friday.
Braves: Keys To Win
The Braves evened up the series thanks to some outstanding pitching so they’ll hope for more of the same in Game 3, whether it’s Strider or Morton on the mound. On the offensive side, Atlanta will want to see its lineup generate some runs outside of Olson and d’Arnaud.
Phillies: Keys To Win
The solution is simple for the Phillies: they’ll need to get their offense going again if they’re going to take back the series lead. Luckily, with Nola on the mound they might not need to put up a ton of runs, but they’re certainly have to do better than zero.
