Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The Padres opened as -120 home favorites and the line hovered right around there throughout the morning with San Diego at -118 and the Cubs going off at +108. The total has remained the same since Sportsbook at 7.5 runs. The OVER is 5-2 in Chicago’s last seven road games against San Diego.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Adbert Alzolay has been rock-solid in his first full season in the major leagues. Alzolay sports a 3.62 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in 2021 and has given up five hits or less and three earned runs or less in all 10 starts this season. The 26-year-old held the Padres to three hits and one run with seven strikeouts in five innings last Wednesday.

Ryan Weathers has split time between the bullpen and the starting staff as a 21-year-old rookie. Weathers has pitched well with a 2.06 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP across 39.1 total innings. He had his worst outing of the season against the Cubs last Tuesday when he allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings.

Chicago News & Notes

The Cubs were scorching-hot with a 14-4 record over their previous 18 games ahead of their four-game series against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants cooled them off with three straight wins before Chicago salvaged a 4-3 victory on Sunday. Chicago is now 33-26 on the season and in a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central.

Javier Baez left Sunday night’s game with right thumb soreness and is listed as questionable to return to the lineup on Monday. The injury doesn’t appear to be serious, but the Cubs will likely be extra cautious with their hard-hitting shortstop. Baez leads the team in home runs (14) and RBIs (39) this season.

San Diego News & Notes

The Padres eked out wins of 4-3 on Thursday and 2-0 on Friday against the New York Mets, but over the weekend they got shut down with a 4-0 loss on Saturday and a 6-2 loss on Sunday. San Diego fell to 2-6 over its last eight games and to 36-25 on the season with those two losses.

Struggling against the Mets’ pitching staff is forgiveable as New York has the second-best team ERA in the majors at 3.05. But even with that in mind, San Diego’s offense has now been in a slump for over a week, averaging only 2.25 runs per game over the team’s last eight games.

The Padres have slipped down to 13th in the majors in run production with 4.56 runs per game. Last year, they finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in run production with 5.42 runs per game.

Betting Pick: UNDER 7.5 runs

Both teams are sending excellent young starting pitchers to the mound in this one. And with the Padres slumping on offense and Javier Baez likely out, runs figure to be hard to come by on Monday night.
