The Los Angeles Angels continue their nine-game road trip when they open a three-game series vs the Seattle Mariners tonight. The Angels are 7-2 SU in their last nine games and will send Andrew Heaney to the bump to try to slow down the surging Mariners, who are 11-2 SU in their last 13 games at home and 17-5 SU in their last 22 games overall. The Angels opened as slight favorites to knock off the AL West leader.
The Angels sit 4.5 games back of the AL West Division leader and in any other year would consider it a successful start to the season. Unfortunately, the Angels share the division with the Astros and Mariners, who both have topped 40 wins already and have the look of postseason clubs.
As a result, Los Angeles will need to rely on starter Andrew Heaney even more this season as prized recruit Shohei Ohtani may be going under the knife for Tommy John surgery, ending his rookie year. Heaney has had his ups and downs this season but is coming off the first complete game of his career in a 1-0 victory vs the Royals last week. However, the lefty has been roughed up on the road as he owns a 4.43 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in four starts this year and the Angels are 1-3 SU and 0-4 against the runline in those games.
In the other dugout, Seattle will send left-hander Wade LeBlanc to the bump to try to continue the Mariners’ winning ways. LeBlanc is coming off a tough outing vs the Astros last week in which he allowed three earned runs off seven hits and only lasted four innings before getting yanked. He does sport a 2.55 ERA in three road starts this season and all the M’s are looking for is for LeBlanc to keep it close as the Mariners are 21-9 SU in one-run games and 6-0 SU in extra-inning games.
The total opened at 8 and trends are pointing to an UNDER in this tilt. The UNDER has hit in nine of the Mariners’ last 11 games at home with an average combined score of 6.3 runs per game. The UNDER has also hit in four of the Angels’ last five games on the road with an average combined score of 7.2 runs per game.
