Opening Day Team-By-Team Breakdown

Manny Machado Baltimore Orioles MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates open the 2016 Major League Baseball season Sunday afternoon. Opening Day is the best time of the year for some franchises as it will be the closest they come to sniffing a division title before the wheels fall off.

It’s tough to cap Opening Day. You have no barometer, save for maybe the way the team played last season or the head-to-head record between a pair of old rivals and/or pitchers who know the opposition inside and out. Spring Training isn’t a real gauge, so Opening Day is a fresh start.

With that in mind, we decided to check out how each of the 30 clubs fare in their opening game of the season. We gathered up straight up records as well as OVER/UNDER records since the 1999 season to see if anything interesting surfaced.

In the previous 17 seasons, the Baltimore Orioles have produced the best record in opening games. The O’s have gone 13-4 SU in their season debut and have a five-game winning streak on Opening Day. Last season, the Orioles thumped the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 6-2 in Florida. Baltimore opens its season versus the Minnesota Twins at Oriole Park Monday afternoon.

As far as OVER bettors are concerned, keep an eye on the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils have the best OVER/UNDER mark in the league at 13-4 and get their campaign started at the Cincinnati Reds Monday afternoon. The Phillies have cashed OVER wagers in three-straight openers, including an 8-0 loss (7.5) versus the Boston Red Sox in last year’s first game.

Here’s a look at the straight up records and OVER/UNDER records for all 30 ball teams in their season opener since 1999.
