Joe Musgrove and the Padres face the Dodgers

Runs Should Be Scarce When Dodgers Host Padres Friday

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 12-3 over their last 15 home games including a 3-0 record over their last three home games. After a disappointing seven-game road trip, the Dodgers return home to face the San Diego Padres this Friday night.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The Dodgers opened as -165 favorites in this matchup and have since moved down to Los Angeles -151. San Diego is going off as a +141 road underdog and the total on Friday is set at eight runs. The UNDER is 11-3 in Los Angeles’s last 14 games.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Joe Musgrove allowed two earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched in San Diego’s 10-2 win over the Houston Astros last Saturday night. Musgrove has allowed two runs or less  in seven of his last eight starts, and the Padres are 6-2 over that eight-game stretch. The right-hander enters Friday night’s game with a 10-8 record, a 2.87 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and 173 strikeouts in 153.2 innings pitched.

Julio Urias allowed an uncharacteristic eight hits in his last start against the San Francisco Giants, but still managed to hold his opponent to just one earned run over 5.2 innings pitched in a 6-1 Dodgers victory. The Dodgers are 6-0 in Urias’s last six starts and the 25-year-old has the best record in the majors at 16-3. Urias owns a 3.11 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP and 168 strikeouts in 156.1 innings pitched.

San Diego News and Notes

San Diego scored all eight of its runs in the second inning on Wednesday night in its 8-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The Padres only had two singles and a double in the eight-run frame as Los Angeles did most of the work for them with five walks, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch. With the win, the Padres improved to 3-1 over their last four games and to 74-65 on the season.

The Padres enter Friday’s action with a one-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the second wild card spot in the National League. If San Diego holds on to this spot and Los Angeles fails to catch the San Francisco Giants for the top spot in the NL West, this weekend’s Padres vs. Dodgers series could be a preview of the NL Wild Card play-in game.

Los Angeles News & Notes

The Dodgers earned wins in their first two games against the St. Louis Cardinals to improve to 88-51. But with back-to-back one-run losses to close out the four-game series, Los Angeles fell to 3-4 over its last seven games and is now 2.5 game back on the division leading Giants.

For some inexplicable reason, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been playing Cody Bellinger every day despite the fact that he is clearly not in the right form to play. Bellinger is 0-for-23 in September and is batting just .158 on the season. With AJ Pollock’s red-hot bat out of the lineup due to Pollock’s hamstring injury, Bellinger’s awful at-bats have become even more noticeable.

Staff Betting Pick: UNDER 8 runs

Joe Musgrove and Julio Urias have both been fantastic this season. They’ve also been consistent. Expect both to pitch well for at least five to six innings, and the bullpen should be able to handle the rest.
