Starting Pitchers

Jose Urquidy (9-4) will aim for his 10th win when he makes his 19th start of the year for Houston. Urquidy last pitched on July 22 against the Mariners, allowing four hits and one earned run over six innings in a winning effort. The left-hander has a 3.93 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP through 100.2 innings.

Seattle is set to counter with Logan Gilbert (10-4), who will try to earn his first win in four starts. Gilbert took a loss in his last game on July 23 against the Astros, giving up five hits and two earned runs over six innings. The southpaw owns a 2.77 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 117 innings.

Rodriguez Comes Up Clutch Again For Seattle

The Mariners completed a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers on Wednesday with a 4-2 win. With Seattle trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, Julio Rodriguez launched a three-run homer to put the Mariners up for good. Marco Gonzales scattered four hits and two earned runs over seven innings to pick up his sixth win of the year.

Rodriguez, who represented Seattle at the MLB All-Star Game, has been a sparkplug for the club over the last couple of weeks, collecting three homers and 12 RBIs in his last seven appearances. The club’s leading hitter has been remarkably consistent, recording at least five home runs and 16 RBIs in each of the last three months.

Astros Drop Third Straight To Athletics

While Seattle won its third straight, Houston dropped its third consecutive contest on Wednesday as the Oakland Athletics won 4-2 to complete the sweep. Stephen Piscotty and Stephen Vogt each hit solo homers in the first to put Oakland up 2-0, and Houston never really recovered. Jake Meyers hit an RBI triple in the fifth and Yordan Alvarez slugged a solo blast in the sixth but two runs and five hits just weren’t enough for the Astros in the ballgame.

The Astros came out of the gate hot after the all-star break with a two-game sweep of the MLB-leading New York Yankees and a three-game sweep of the Mariners, but they couldn’t get into a groove against the Athletics. Still, Houston ranks third in the majors in winning percentage behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers (65-32) and Yankees (66-33) while owning the third-best defense at 3.39 runs against per game.

Mariners vs Astros Pick & Insights

Mariners: Keys To Victory

This could be a low-scoring battle as Houston and Seattle own two of the top five team ERAs in the majors at 3.06 and 3.57, respectively. While Gilbert hasn’t won since July 5, he has been pretty consistent over that span, allowing two earned runs or less in three of his last four outings. If Gilbert brings his A-game, the Mariners could pick up their fourth straight win.

Astros: Keys To Victory

Alvarez has had a slow month by his standards with just six home runs and 11 RBIs, but the Astros slugger still ranks third in the majors with 29 homers on the season. Alvarez has shown signs of turning it around, though, with three dingers and seven RBIs over his last six games – the Astros will need more of that if they’re going to snap the slump.
