Underdog Mariners Looking For Redemption in Houston

The Houston Astros opened as the massive betting favorite tonight at home to Seattle. Last week in Washington State, the Astros made the Mariners look very average after Houston lost the first game of the series. The M’s got the jump on Houston last night and look to flip the script this weekend. If the Mariners want to be considered legit AL West contenders, they will need to have a remarkable weekend.

SHARK BITES
  • The Mariners are 4-12 SU and ATS in their last 16 games against the Astros.
  • The Astros are 0-6 SU in their last six games against their division at home.
  • The total has gone OVER in seven of the Mariners' last nine games. (Avg combined score: 11.0)

Mariners vs Astros Matchup Page

Two Innings-Eaters on the Mound

Gerrit Cole (146.1 IP) and Mike Leake (140.2 IP) are both in the top 13 when it comes to innings pitched in the American League. Cole (10-4, 2.64 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) is making his third start of the year against the Mariners but his first at the Juice Box. The Astros are 1-1 in Cole’s two starts against Seattle. He was the losing pitcher at Safeco Field last week despite tossing 6.2 innings and only allowing four hits and two earned runs. Cole’s WHIP vs the Mariners is 0.95.

Mike Leake (8-7, 4.16 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) is 0-2 vs Houston in two starts this season. Through those two starts, Leake pitched a combined 12 innings surrendering 15 hits and eight earned runs. The eight-year veteran from San Diego, California is winless in seven straight starts, although Seattle is 6-2 SU in Leake’s last eight road games.

Houston has Dominated the Matchup

In 16 games since September 2017, the Astros are 12-4 SU and ATS in this American League West matchup with an average winning margin of 3.75. It’s been an all hands on deck approach for Houston against the Mariners this year.

Nobody has more than two home runs but seven guys are batting over .300. Marwin Gonzales and Josh Reddick both have seven RBIs in the first 10 games of this season series. Houston will need even more guys to contribute this weekend with Jose Altuve, Brian McCann, George Springer, Carlos Correa, and Lance McCullers all on the DL.

By contrast, Seattle is hitting .225/.262/.389 in the first ten games against the defending champs in 2018. Jean Segura leads the team with a .310 average to go with three home runs and six RBIs.

OVER Bets Have Been Cashing For Both Teams

The total for tonight’s game opened at 7.5 runs and that certainly opens the door for the trend of totals hitting the OVER to continue.

The total has gone over in six of the last eight games between these teams with an average combined score of 9.13. In addition to the games between these teams, recent games for both teams vs other opponents have hit the OVER as well. The total has gone over in seven of the Mariners’ last nine games with an average combined score of 11.0 and totals bettors have cashed on the OVER in five of the Astros’ last six home games with an average combined score of 10.5
