Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The Cubs opened as -135 favorites before action on the Cardinals pushed the line down slightly to Chicago -122. St. Louis is a +112 road underdog in this primetime matchup while the total is set at 9.5 runs. The OVER is 7-1 in St. Louis’s last eight road games.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Carlos Martinez has a staggering 28.93 ERA and a 3.86 WHIP through two terrible starts in June. Martinez has seen his season ERA rise from 4.22 to 6.21 after allowing 15 earned runs in just 4.2 innings so far this month. The right-hander has struggled on the road this season with a 1-4 record and a 7.04 ERA through six road starts.

Zach Davies bounced back from a disappointing start against the San Francisco Giants with a strong one last Tuesday against the San Diego Padres as he allowed only one hit and two walks in six scoreless innings. Davies has a 4.45 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP this season but has allowed one run or less in six of his last eight starts. The Cubs are 6-2 over that stretch.

St. Louis News & Notes

The Cardinals have been having a rough time trying to record 27 outs in recent weeks. St. Louis fell to 32-32 on the season and to 2-10 over their last 12 games in Saturday’s 7-2 loss as John Gant was chased from the game in a five-run second inning for the Cubs. Over the team’s current 12-game slump, the Cardinals have allowed seven runs per game.

St. Louis is also 0-7 in its last seven games against division rivals in the National League Central. The Cardinals were in first place in the NL Central with a 22-14 record back in early May, but a 10-18 record since then has dropped St. Louis to fourth place in the division sitting five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cubs for the top spot.

Chicago News & Notes

Joc Pederson hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning on Saturday to add the final insurance run in Chicago’s 7-2 win over the Cardinals. Pederson has hit a home run in three straight games and is 5-for-12 with three runs and five RBI over that stretch.  Chicago is averaging 6.25 runs per game over its current three-game winning streak.

The Cubs have been getting offense from up and down the lineup of late as opposed to just from their “big three” of Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo. Recent call-up Patrick Wisdom has hit eight home runs through his first 10 starts with the Cubs and has a .347 batting average and 12 RBI in 49 at bats. Chicago is now 19-7 over its last 26 games and 37-27 on the season.

Betting Pick: Chicago -125

With the Cubs hitting the ball well and Carlos Martinez getting lit up in his last two starts, the Cardinals could be in trouble here. Chicago should get the job done as a small favorite in this one.
