  • In light of a 5-2 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals improved their record to a major league-best 16-4 SU in August and moved atop the NL wild-card standings by a half-game over Milwaukee as a result. The Cards, who are 2.5 games back of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs and have homered in 14 straight contests, look to stay hot in the series finale at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. Sportsbooks opened L.A. as -158 home favorites with a total of 8.5.

    Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler are slated to get the ball for the Cardinals and Dodgers, respectively. Flaherty (7-6, 3.05 ERA) and Buehler (6-4, 3.19) will be facing each other for the first time in what has the chance to be the first of many highly anticipated matchups. Flaherty has rattled off three straight wins, highlighted by a solid three-hit, six-inning shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers last Friday. The 22-year-old has recorded at least seven strikeouts in each of his last six starts. Flaherty boasts a minuscule 0.95 ERA in his last three appearances and is 4-3 with a 3.00 ERA on the road in 2018.

    Buehler (6-4, 3.19) is back to his dominating ways from early in the season, going 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA over his past four starts. Buehler gave up only one run over six innings against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, leading the way to an 11-1 victory for the Dodgers. The Vanderbilt product, who recently suffered a microfracture in his right rib cage, hasn’t shown any signs of the injury impacting him in recent weeks. Buehler hasn’t surrendered more than two earned runs in a game since July 25 when he was taken for five by the Philadelphia Phillies in a 7-3 loss.

    Cardinals continue to be road warriors

    The Cards have been providing some excellent value away from home lately, and St. Louis’ triumph on Tuesday as a +193 moneyline underdog was the biggest upset on the board. With the win, the Cardinals improved to a perfect 7-0 SU in their last seven road tilts, with an average combined score of 4.3 runs. St. Louis is also 4-0 SU in its last four meetings with the Dodgers, with an average winning margin of 2 runs. Considering the Dodgers are 0-5 SU in their last five games against right-handed starting pitchers, the +148 underdog price looks appealing for St. Louis in this one.

    Buehler’s starts at Dodger Stadium have led to a litany of UNDERs

    When the Dodgers hand the ball to Buehler in Los Angeles, low-scoring affairs tend to follow. In his previous eight home games, the Dodgers have gone UNDER in seven of them. The UNDER is also 4-0 in the last four clashes between the NL clubs, with an average combined score of 5 runs. If Buehler and Flaherty are on their game, the UNDER could certainly be worth a look.
