  • The Nevada Wolf Pack were ranked in the top 15 in the NCAA for the majority of the year even though they had played a cupcake schedule but their loss in the MWC conference final has placed them in a difficult region and against a strong matchup with the Florida Gators. The Gators were up and down for most of the year but then peaked late in the SEC tourney.

The Wolf Pack opened as 3-point dogs but then moved to 2-point favorites. The total opened at 132.5.

    Florida vs Nevada Game Center

    STANDOUT STATS

    • Florida’s defense has been one of the best in the NCAA as the Gators hold teams to 63.6 points per game (ranked 18th) while limiting teams to 32 percent shooting from behind the arc (rated 53rd). In their last four games, they held teams to 63.5 points per game.
    • Nevada’s Caleb Martin averages 19.2 points per game and has led the Wolf Pack in scoring in five of their last six games. He combines with his twin brother Cody and forward Jordan Caroline to average 48.2 points per game; the trio were on last year’s team that went to the Sweet 16.
    • Florida’s three-point defense will be put to the test because Nevada averages 26.5 points per game from behind the arc, which is 60th in the NCAA. The Wolf Pack only average 33.4 percent from behind the arc on 26.2 attempts.
    • Nevada’s biggest weakness may be size as the Wolf Pack play with a five-man starting lineup with no player taller than six-foot-eight and only one reserve at 6-11. Although Nevada has the rebounding edge at 37.4 per game to Florida’s 33.6, that could be an issue if Nevada’s shots aren’t falling.
    • In the last two NCAA tournaments, No. 7 seeds are 6-2 SU and ATS in eight games vs 10 seeds.
    • The UNDER has hit in 11 of Florida’s last 14 games (avg. combined score 131).

My Best Bet for Florida vs Nevada

    Florida +2

I had predicted Florida to upset Nevada as soon as the brackets were revealed and I’m not backing off that prediction now. I loved Nevada coming into the tourney but I think the Wolf Pack got a bad draw because even if they win this game, they have a high probability of facing Michigan State in the second round.

Nevada’s strengths are nearly negated when playing a team like Florida because the Wolf Pack like to play small-ball with six-foot-eight Jordan Caroline at center and let the Martin twins shoot a ton of threes. Well, Florida will be ready for that because it just faced an Auburn team that is doing its best Houston Rockets impression for three-point attempts and has the size down low to be a real problem for Nevada’s frontcourt. It will likely be a close game with it coming down to the wire but I like the fact that Florida has played a tougher schedule throughout the year and can drive Nevada’s shooters off the line.
